That Time Again

Daylight saving (“savings” for those that don’t know better) time is here again.  And, again I have the same stupid question, “Why?”  As old time singer Tennessee Ernie Ford said, “Daylight saving time is like cutting a foot off one end of a blanket and sewing it on the other to make it longer.”

This are some interesting facts about DST.  Believe it or not, Benjamin Franklin did not invent DST.  He did jokingly suggest it, but it was first used in Canada in 1908.  Germany was the first country to use it in 1916, to save energy used for lighting during WWI.  “Fast Time,” as it was called, was implemented in the U.S. by Woodrow Wilson in 1918, for the same reason Germany had adopted DST.

In 1942, “War Time” was in force from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945.  Another government idea that never ends.  Over the years, it has been on again and off again and not all states participate.  Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii still don’t see a need for it.

Now that you know all that, you need to know this.  There is no conclusive evidence that DST saves any energy.  In fact, it may actually add to energy use.  “Why do we do it then?”, you ask.  Because government came up with another solution to a problem that does not exist.

As usual, I want to speak on behalf of all the roosters in all the countries that have adopted DST.  Since animals have more rights than humans, it is time we stop the psychological abuse of roosters.  Roosters don’t have watches and have to stay on standard time.  It is devastating to them when they get up to announce the crack of dawn and everybody is already up.  It would not surprise me that most, if not all roosters may have to have psychological evaluations and may be put on depression medications.

Let’s stand up for the roosters.  Demand DST be stopped.

There’s nothing sadder than a rooster with DSTSD - Daylight Saving Time Stress Disorder.
