Let’s say you are walking down the street on a cold windy day and you see an elderly woman shivering on the sidewalk. She obviously is sick and looks like she may not have eaten for awhile. You see a man walking past her. You stop the man and take some money from him. The money is used to feed the woman and get her medical care and a warm coat. Now here’s the question.
Did you commit theft? If theft is defined as taking from someone that which is theirs, did you commit a crime? You did use the money for a good cause and did not take a penny for your own use. Let’s add a few witnesses that saw what you did - take the money and help the woman. They all agree you did the right thing.
Did you commit a crime?
What about the man that was robbed? What if he could not afford to lose the money and needed it to provide for his own family?
What if the man that was robbed was you?
Maybe you should ask the government. They know the answer.
