When I was a boy there were many things that were sacred and deserved respect. The flag was truly the symbol of our nation and was not to be disrespected in any manner. Women were to be not only respected but looked upon with honor. The passing of anyone was a time that you showed respect, regardless of their perceived status in life.
Police, fire fighters, teachers, doctors and anyone in the military were respected by all. Children addressed adults as Mr., Miss or Mrs. And, they said, "Yes Sir or yes Mam." That included the parents of the other children you played with.
People didn’t have to demand respect because they were treated respectfully because they behaved in like kind. Everyone was expected to be respectful and courteous. Whoa unto you when you got home, if you didn’t.
Every religion was scared and treated as such. The Bible was recognized as the Holy Book it is. Ministers and preachers were treated with a special respect. That was because of who they worked for.
But all of that has gone away. "Times have changed," as they say. Life is no longer sacred. We live in a "liberated society" with "progressive" thinking.
The question is, "What was given up to get here?"
