Where We Are

Thomas Paine said, "These are times that try men’s souls." He wrote that when this country was in crisis. We face a crisis today that may be more challenging than a revolutionary war. At every turn there is condemnation of what happened over 200 years ago, with no thought of how the evolution of a small band of colonies grew to become the greatest nation in the history of mankind.

Political correctness, which is political and not correct, has like a cancer eaten away at the very life of freedom and rights. It has gone from something that people laughed at to a force that can even forbid laughing at all.

I had the opportunity to visit with a cousin-in-law this week that I haven’t seen in a long time. He shared a story about his job at a Dallas area college. He was required to attend a sensitivity and sexual harassment training. In the training he was presented with the following scenario:

Instructor: You are exiting a men’s restroom where directly across the hall is a women’s restroom. Just as you exit, a woman is coming out. You notice that she has pulled up her undergarments and caught her dress in them. What would you do?

Cousin: I would politely bring her attention to what she had done.

Instructor: When you approached her, would you touch her?

Cousin: Yes, to get her attention.

Instructor: Where would you touch her?

Cousin: I would touch her on the shoulder.

Instructor: You would have committed sexual assault. You should step around and get in front of her to get her attention and then quietly point out the error. Now, how would you handle the situation?

Cousin: I didn’t see anything.

If you take the instructor’s point of view as being correct, you cannot understand the true human compassion of one person trying to help another from being embarrassed.

This is where we live today.

In times that try men’s souls.
