I have mentioned before that in our little commune we have an email bulletin board that keeps us all up on the latest "stuff" for sale and lost dogs. This is important I am told. But, I do enjoy reading how people think.
The latest edition has a notice that a woman has a Samsung washer for sale. No big deal, but it is one that was recalled and she has been paid for the machine through the Samsung recall program. She explained this in her message. Now, she wants to sell the machine for $50. Recall programs usually require that the item be destroyed because they are a potential danger to people and/or property.
It’s scary that this woman would want to sell one of her neighbors a machine that could hurt someone.
What’s more scary is that someone will buy it.

Absolutely Certain
There are so many things in life that change. It is often said, "The only thing that last forever is change." In my little world, there is constant change. About the time I lean how to do something, it changes. And, most people do not like change.
Jobs change and the way you do a job changes. Where you shop changes as businesses close or their product or service gets unworthy of your business. Medicine changes with new discoveries (actually uncoveries). Education changes, and not for the better in many cases. The route you take to work or school changes, and the time of day changes the traffic. Okay, you get the idea. Things change.
But, in my lifetime, I have discovered one absolute constant that hasn’t changed since I discovered America.
A bad day fishing, beats a good day at work.

Nothing Common
America has been diversified from the beginning, but the "commons" that held us together have slowly eroded. There was a time when we had a common bond to be Americans before what ever our nationality happened to be. We had great pride in being American.
We had a common language, English. Yes, there were other languages spoken in private conversations, but English was how we communicated to each other. Even today, English is the common language to fly a plane anywhere in the world. But, English is no longer spoken exclusively on our own soil.
Common decency was observed in private and public gatherings. We just knew that we should be decent in our behavior and expect others to be also.
We had a common belief in Judeo-Christian principles that guided how we made and observed our laws. We respected other religious beliefs, but knew that the common belief upon which this nation was founded had proven to be just and fair to all.
We used to have common patriotism. And, we knew and understood what it takes to keep this country free. Regardless of our personal lives, we stood together to defend the republic which we had formed. Our flag meant more than words can describe. And, the words, "One nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all," described our unity and dedication to this country.
Perhaps the commons that held us together have fallen to the wayside because of the loss of common sense.
It is not so common anymore.

Eternity
Eternity means forever and forever. It has no end. Have you ever wondered why God set up eternity? Most people don’t. But I do. And, I think I have the answer.
For those that die without their sins being forgiven, all their sins will be revealed for all to see. We’re talking billions or maybe trillions of people. If each one must stand and face each sin, it’s going to take a while. I know some folks that will take up a couple of millenniums each.
If mine weren’t forgiven, eternity might be longer.

Alternate Fee
The Dallas Mornings News, aka "We HATE Trump News," had another uniformed story in the business section this week. The writer, which I will not name because I don’t want to give him credit for knowing how to type, reported that Oncor, the transmission and distribution electric service company for a large part of Texas, wants to charge people that use wind generators, solar panels or battery back up systems. On the surface, this appears to be punishment for trying to save energy, but is it? It actually is an attempt to treat customers fairly.
The electric utility industry must make billion dollar investments in what is called the "grid" to deliver electricity to your house. Those cost are recovered and a regulated profit allowed by the Public Utility Commission. The grid is designed to have enough electric generation, transmission and distribution facilities to meet your demand for power, anytime, day or night. I also mention here that many utilities offer incentives for energy conservation measures, but when someone wants to provide most of their own power and then stay connected to the grid, just in case, there certainly should be a fee assessed.

Uninformed
Politicians view everyone as being unwashed and stupid, so they are easy to control. I will admit that I do know some people that are unwashed and a few that are stupid. But the majority of the populous is simply uninformed. Some choose to be uninformed while the others have no means of getting the information that major decisions are made by government.
The number I keep hearing about "Obamacare" cost increases is 69%. Does that mean that everyone that has the government "control" insurance plan will see their premiums go up by 68%. I don’t know because the information is not readily available.
As in one of my previous writings, I hate percentages being used as an attempt to sway something one way or the other. 68% of $200 is one thing, but 68% of $1000 is quite something else. Government and the media like to use percentages. "If you do this or that you have a 50% greater chance of dying." If I do this or that and my chances are 1 in 2, then 50% is dramatic. But, if I have a 1 in a million chance of dying, then I would now have a 1.5 in 1 million chance. That puts a whole new perspective on it.
Why doesn’t government simply issue an information piece on what the numbers are. A one or two page document that reveals the cost, premiums and deductibles per age group and health condition? It would be more than anything we’ve had before. And, add how the plan is paid for, in addition to what individuals contribute.
In case you don’t know, you have a 100% of not ever finding out what is really going on until you change the people in office.
My guess that is going to have a 100% increase too.

All they have to do is have Speaker Ryan stand at the podium and say, "We have to pass this bill so we can see what’s in it."

Final Solution
Okay, this is my final solution to all the illegal immigration issues, including terrorist attacks. Each person that is in favor of allowing anyone and everyone into this country illegally, vetted or not, just has to sign up to accept their fair share of illegals. The fair share amount varies from one to maybe up to 50. Some cultures have multiple families living in one house.
You the host, will be responsible for housing, clothing, food, and, medical services for those assigned to you. You must provide education including how to speak English to young and old at your expense. You will also be responsible for their behavior including any criminal activity. If they do the crime and are caught and prosecuted, then you must also do the time with them. This will leave your family to assume your duties while you are imprisoned. I forgot to mention that you also have financial responsibility including fines and judgements. Oh, and they can never move out of your house, nor can you trade with someone else who also has agreed to accept them.
These duties continue until you die and then are passed along to your survivors.
The solution is simple and takes the burden off the citizens of the country that disagree with the current practice and policies dealing with illegal immigrants. Not only is it fair, but should be acceptable to all those that advocate for them.

Sunday Paper
Can you imagine committing a crime and not worrying about getting caught? The Dallas Morning News staff writers Dianne Solis and Naheed Rajwani believe that select persons should not have to worry. They wrote an article subtitled ‘Fear, anxiety plague those living in Trump’s America.’ It was in the Sunday March 19, Metro & State section.
The story was all about how illegal immigrants and even some legal ones that now live in fear because they live in ‘Trump’s America.’ I for one did not know that Trump owned America.
Apparently the problem is that now, those that have committed a crime, are in fear of being caught and deported or in some cases put in jail.
The clincher of the whole story was the large picture on the front of the page. It showed a woman holding two small flags in front of her face to hide her identity. An American flag and a Mexican flag.
She was holding the Mexico flag above the U.S. flag.

Don't Worry, Be Happy
According to a new report, as released by the AP in D.C.,Norway is the happiest country on earth. Norway moved from number 4 to number one edging out Denmark, with Iceland, Switzerland and Finland rounding out the top five, according to the World Happiness Report. The U.S. fell to a ranking of 14 from 13 last year. Heck, I didn’t even know there was a World Happiness Report.
And, guess what? Money doesn’t buy happiness. It seems that money can actually stand in the way of how people relate to each other. Yes, you do have to have money, but there is a dividing point. The big happy factor is a sense of community. Other factors include is the freedom to make your own life choices, and your sense of how corrupt your government is.
There you are folks. A scientific study that proves iPhones, free living expenses, and occasionally burning a building or police car are not the path to happiness.

But, it couldn’t hurt to whistle while you work.

Imagine
Can you imagine the unimaginable? No, because we don’t have reference points in our lives to encompass all the things that feed our imagination. It is impossible for me to imagine and understand all the bad things that happen to people, because I have never experienced or witnessed them. And, only witnessing some horrible human events, does not give you the full impact.
Unless you live in a bubble, you have or will experience great physical or emotional discomfort or both. Some will suffer more, but you get the idea. If you do live in a bubble, you will experience pain that others will not understand.
Most of us believe the old adage that ‘time heals all pains." Can you imagine what if it would be like if your worse pain never was healed? Add to that, great physical discomfort, like unbearable heat, no water or food, and darkness where there are literally billions of others in the same condition. Imagine the only site you can see is straight up where there are billions of people living in absolute paradise, and you can’t go there - not ever.
Just imagine too, that you have a constant memory that you could have been in paradise, but you chose not to select that life option.
By now you may have figured out that I am talking about Hades, Gehenna, or just plain Hell. It is impossible to imagine what an eternity there will be like. And, it is equally impossible to imagine what Heaven will be like.
If you believe that there is no heaven or hell, then you need to imagine yourself in the latter.
As for me, I’m shooting for heaven because I don’t want to spend eternity landscaping.

Still Landscaping
As mentioned a few days ago, I know nothing about landscaping. But, it hasn’t stopped my financial controller from coming up with ideas for me to do. She and I went to select some plants today and all I know is that they are green and they are supposed to stay that way.
The plants are supposed to grow a lot more than I want, so I’m guessing in a few years I will have to do this all over again. Something for a grumpy old man to look forward to.
I read the information on the tags and the plants are supposed to be deer and drought tolerant. Being the way I am, I asked the guy at the nursery what this statement means.
He said that the plants will tolerate deer grazing on them sometimes and will tolerate drought conditions. They don’t like either one, but they will tolerate them.
Must be Republican plants.

Closed Because Of Weather
When there is a major weather event like the snow storms in the Northeast, federal government offices close. Yet, small business owners stay open. They find a way to get to their shops because they depend upon the income. In other words, they have some skin in the game - making a living.
Small businesses, and some large ones, have to work and therefore they face whatever hardships necessary to keep the wheels turning. But not government. Let me clarify that cities keep city services operating as best they can to protect the citizens.
Does this mean that federal offices are not really that important. Yes. Let’s see a show of hands that are surprised. How many times has congress shut down the government and it went out of business? Seems to reason that we really don’t need as much government as they would have you believe.
I hope you did noticed in all the reports about the weather shutting down operations that the soldiers at the tomb of the unknown soldier don’t call off their service. Nor do the soldiers in the field.
It’s called duty and honor.

In an old Three Stooges movie, the Three are testifying in court and are asked, "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and everything but the truth?" Does this sound familiar about the media today?
There is an old demonstration about telling the truth. If you take a group of people and you tell one of them a story of facts and then have them repeat the story to another person and so on until each person has received the story from one other person, what is the end result? The last person has almost no idea of what the real story was.
The truth is that one is responsible for what one says and not for what someone else hears. But, be careful of what you say because others want to hear what you didn’t say.
And, the media never lets the truth interfere with a good story.

Landscaping
With all that is going on in the world and my tiny little spec, I find myself doing another thing that I know absolutely nothing about - landscaping. My early years were spent in desert climates where landscaping was a matter of picking up trash that had blown into our yard which was dirt. I like plain dirt because you don’t have to water or mow it.
When I got to the city I discovered that you had to have grass and flower beds. I still don’t understand why. I don’t have any cows to eat the grass and if you want flowers, go by a florist shop and look through the window. If God had wanted us to have landscaping, he would have designed everything with borders, mulch and shrubs.
Truth is I was quite happy with what was in place when we bought this house. But the power that is, didn’t want everything outside going untouched. I will spare you all the details of what happens when you start digging up shrubs that have been in place for over 30 years. Think sprinkler pipes and roots. So now I have one bed cleaned out and ready for the mulch. Mulch is supposed to help on weed control, but the weeds don’t know that. Soon I will be planting something, but not cotton which is what I suggested.
All I can tell you is that if I planted a rock, it would die.

There are millions of crimes committed in this country every day. Most are not reported, rape tops the list, and there are few criminals that ever are punished. We have everything from shoplifting to murder. And, not we are witnessing attacks on basic laws that have stood for over 200 years.
Freedom of speech crimes happen everyday on college campuses and anywhere there is a difference of opinion with the radical progressives. Recently a middle age college professor was beaten and taken to a hospital because she invited a speaker to the campus. Look around at all the protest - riots - over Trump being elected and his endeavors to ‘drain the swamp’ call Washington D.C..

That Time Again
Here it is again - daylight saving time. Notice that it is not ‘savings’ time. Every year I complain about daylight saving time, and we still have it. Please make a note, World War II is over. That’s why we have this stupid practice. It was supposed to save energy.
Reality is that there is no energy savings by turning the clock forward. In fact, it may increase energy use. If you would like a 10 to 20 hour explanation on energy savings, let me know. Technological advances have more than made up for any savings perceived by losing an hour of sleep.

Reality is that there is no energy savings by turning the clock forward. In fact, it may increase energy use. If you would like a 10 to 20 hour explanation on energy savings, let me know. Technological advances have more than made up for any savings perceived by losing an hour of sleep.

Shadow Government
There are a number of web sites that are reporting that Obama is setting up a shadow government to overthrow Trump. Does this sound like a conspiracy to you?
Let’s examine some facts before deciding. Obama was a community organizer before entering the Senate, then jumped to President. Therefore he could easily organize followers, especially when funded by those like George Soros.
From day one as prez, he did take several steps to divide and conquer, or even destroy the country. He doubled the national debt in eight years, spending more than had spent since the nation was founded. Going broke is a good way to conquer a country. And, ‘Moochelle" did her part by spending over $200 million on vacations, not including her attendants as she bathed in luxury.
Obama urged select people to question and challenge the police. He did say that he was on their side. But, he also said that when sides are chosen, he would side with Muslims. His actions were unquestionable when he attempted to divide the races, religions and sexes. Divide we fall.
With his support, freedom of speech has been quashed in many of the universities and colleges. Even by force.
His appointments were questionable at best. Remember Holder and ‘Fast and Furious?’ Were any of his appointees concerned with the Constitution or law?
The list can go on and on, but there is evidence that the reports could be right. What if they are? Surely the current administration can recognize any real activity and take action to prevent it from happening. Really? The Trump administration is up to its neck in attacks, delays and bans, coming from the previous government power players and outsiders.
I think that the most glaring action that could make the reports true is the fact that Obama chose to force the wants and whims of a group that represents less than 1/10 of one percent of the population, or perhaps not even that large.
If he can make you lose the will to fight over common decency and common sense, he just may be able to make you roll over and play dead on anything.
These are dangerous times if you think about what has happened and how easily we all could lose all.

Eating Causes Death
According to the latest research on the foods we eat or don’t eat, about half of what we eat is going to kill us. In the report released by the AP, bad foods include red meat and bacon, while good food include nuts and seeds. No wonder the squirrels in my neighborhood are so healthy.
Reportedly, the research based on U.S. government data shows that about 700,000 people died in 2012 from heart disease, strokes and diabetes, because of poor eating habits. I thought only smoking could kill you. And, I really want to see all the data on bacon, not that I won’t stop eating it.
You are supposed to eat only seeds and nuts, salmon or sardines, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. And, you can’t have salt or salty foods, processed meats, steaks and hamburgers or sugary drinks. Generally speaking, if it taste good, you shouldn’t eat it.
It may be possible that the report is true and factual. And, if you strictly adhere to the recommendations you may or may not live for a long time. But, you will die healthy.
If you stick to the diet, and should die prematurely, it will seem like a long time.

Day Without A Man
Since we are all about equality, I would like to suggest a ‘Day Without A Man’ day. We guys could spend the day fishing, playing golf or doing whatever comes to mind, but no working. Okay, let me see if I’ve got this straight. North Korea is launching missiles, China is all upset, our military isn’t ready to fight and the radical Islamic terrorist are popping up all over. We have an infrastructure that must be repaired or replaced. There are millions of illegal immigrants sucking the life blood out of social services and suing us. We have numerous natural disasters with millions affected. Our schools don’t teach enough basics for a person to function in the workplace. Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is a French term for ‘Fat Tuesday’ and supposedly leads up to the beginning of Lent. There has been much discussion about wether or not Mardi Gras is a religious celebration. The short answer is yes, it is a pagan celebration - a carnival.
My sister-in-law and I have a difference of opinion about the event that takes place in New Orleans almost every year. There have been a few times it was not held. She thinks that it is a big religious event, as do a lot of other people. I don’t.
No where do I find any evidence that Jesus said to go forth, get drunk, urinate in public, have an orgy in the street and expose your body to get some beads. That rules out Christians. Muslims certainly don’t believe in this behavior. Because Christianity and Islam are the two big religions, I suspect that all other legitimate beliefs would follow suit.
Mardi Gras may be what some want religion to be. Hey, the event draws about a million visitors to "Nawlins" every year.
I’ve been on Bourbon Street, in the daytime, and I didn’t see anything holy there.
And, it stinks like an open out house.

Depression
Depression is a dark hole that swallows one into oblivion. It is difficult to treat because one does not know he/she has it and therefore he/she is not willing to put forth the effort to regain the life enjoyed before. My friend, I’ll call him Jim, has sunk into depression and he doesn’t know it. He has no interest in anything and only waits to die.
I’ve known Jim for more than 40 years. He and I have spent hours making each other laugh and just having a good time. Not anymore. All my efforts to make him laugh are unresponsive. More and more, he seems to not want to talk to me, or anyone else. He just wants to die. The saddest part is that I can’t help him. Only, he can help him and he won’t.
I don’t profess to know a lot, but I do know that the way out of the darkness is to first get up and start looking for the light. By that I mean that one must find someone or something that gives a sense of responsibility and a duty and then spend the effort it takes to dedicate oneself. Get a pet. A dog, or cat, or a chicken or something that is dependent upon you. Look around and see other people that depend upon you - a spouse, a child or grandchild or neighbor. As, you may agree, people need to be needed.
When I first contracted Lyme disease I experienced a long period of time that I made myself schedule something the next day that had to be done, before I went to sleep at night. It might be having coffee with a friend or business associate. Something. Anything. The one I hated was mowing the lawn, but I did it anyway.
Today there are many medications used to treat depression, and some of them help. But the problem is that many old people fall into depression and never seek help or treatment. They don’t know they are depressed. They just think the way they feel is part of getting older. My friend Jim.
I’m not sure if his wife or children see what’s going on in his life. I doubt they do. And, I’m not playing doctor, but I do have enough education and experience to recognize where Jim is and is going. He has stopped laughing.
I read somewhere, "You don’t stop laughing because you get old. You get old, because you stop laughing."

Not PC
No one is exactly sure when political correctness started, perhaps in the late 18th century. It became popular in this country in the 60s and has almost progressed to blaming someone for what they are thinking, even if no one can read anyone’s mind.
My first remembrance of how significant political correctness would be in the destruction of this country and any others, came from a newspaper reporter. He wrote a story about PC and that was the last anyone heard of his writing.
Those that know me know that I am not politically correct. To me, politically correct is purely political and never correct. It is a term applied to something that sane people know is wrong, but radicals want it and are willing to do anything to get it - usually political.
To demonstrate non-political correctness, I share with you this little tidbit from the net this week:
"I used to be a male trapped in a female body. Then I was born."

I don’t know about you, but I am really tired of all the attacks being made against the new administration. However, I don’t expect them to stop because the media is sold out to the left wingnuts that don’t have the capacity to realize that they lost the election.
It appears what the democrats are just going down the list of things that have done or are doing and accusing the republicans of doing them. The vitriol just keeps on coming while they forget about a few details. Eric Holder ran guns into Mexico, and that didn’t work out. Hillary’s foundation received millions from the Russians and others while she was Secretary of State, not to mention her email scandal.
Did you notice that the Russian ambassador sat with the Democrats at President Trumps speech?

New Club
When you get old and retire, you may find there is more and more that interest you less and less. Of course I know a lot of people that are not old, nor retired this applies to as well. So, today’s missive is to offer you an idea that perhaps you’ve not thought about - a casket club.
In New Zealand there is a village that has a casket club. People get together and build their own casket. Not only will it save money, but it will provide you with hours of entertainment and interaction with old and new friends. Think about it this way, you are building the last house you will ever need. Let your imagination go wild, so long as you comply with local laws and procedures.
The group in New Zealand reports that some folks stay on after they finish their casket to help new members and just for the fun of it. With all the benefits, you may want to organize a club in your neighborhood, or perhaps take in the whole town.

Sounded Like A President
The buzz today is about President Trump’s speech. The talking heads seem to agree that he really did sound like a president. And, he inspired the Republicans and scared the Democrats.
Trump received a standing ovation fifty-three times, but the highlight of the night and the most memorable moment was his recognition of Carryn Owens, the widow of Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, who was killed in the recent mission in Yemen. Trump said, "Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero, battling against terrorism and securing our nation. Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity." This brought a standing ovation that lasted two minutes.
You know what? Trump just make a great president, if they let him do his job.
