Passwords

In this world of computers, iPads, iPhones, and all that other stuff, you gotta have lots of passwords. I currently have over 60 passwords, and I use 10 to 15 per day. Obviously, I have some that I use so seldom that they expire, but I update them when I hit those sites. The point is that there are just too many passwords that one has to remember or write down. Writing them down is not a good things because they could fall into the wrong hands and cause you a mountain of problems.

I yearn for the good old days when everyone a rolladex for names, addresses and phone numbers and that was it.

Who can say what the future will bring. Will we all have to be implanted with a microchip with passwords?

There is even a password to get into Heaven.

I’ve got that one memorized.

Quit Shopping

One of my jobs is to do most of the shopping, but I’m going to quit. It’s getting to be more complicated than I can handle. As mentioned in previous posts, I have learned that while shopping at Wally’s Mart, the first place I need to look for popcorn or chips is in the toilet paper aisle. There have been other stories, but we won’t mention them right now.

Why making my trip to Wally’s Mart this week, I happened to be walking past the children’s shoes aisle and stopped in my tracks. Right there among the kiddie shoes were auto oil filters and air filters.

I didn’t ask why. I immediately headed to the front of the store to see if the one cashier was on duty.

She was taking a break.

What Can You Do?

My financial controller is taking an online defensive driving course to get an insurance discount. Her computer in our home office is only a few feet away so I can hear the audio. In one section of the course, they went over the things you should not do while driving.

First, you are not supposed to use your cell phone. Not for talking or texting. Then, you are not supposed to read while driving. Smoking or drinking (even coffee) are on the don’t do list. Eating is out too. Don’t change radio stations or put in a new CD - you should do this before you leave. And, keep conversations with passengers at a minimum (I like this one).

True story, while driving in Dallas traffic during the morning rush hour I followed a woman that was using the rearview mirror to put on her make up and brush her hair, while she was eating a fried chicken leg. Since I had no opportunity to pass for a few minutes, I watched her. She really did get the hair brush and the chicken leg mixed up and brushed her hair with the chicken leg.

My question is, if one is not supposed to do all the things they say in the driving class, what can one do?

Maybe, find that woman and watch her brush her hair.

Warning: Retirement Is Deadly

After only 10 years, I have determined that one should never retire. Retirement is deadly, and retirement papers should be required to include this warning.

The problem with retirement is that it’s much more work than work ever was. It is much harder to deal with life because there are always more things that you have to get done than you’ll ever get done. At work you could finish a project, but not in retirement. At work, you put in your eight hours and went home to relax. In retirement, you are already at home and there is no relaxing. Plus, you usually only have to work five days per week. Retirement is seven days a week with no weekends off, vacations or holidays. Wait, you say, there is time for vacations. Wait until you get back home and find what’s waiting.

I know that there are people that die while they have jobs, but everybody dies that retires.

This warning has been presented as a public service.

We as a nation have been separated from the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God. If we stand divided, then a second Declaration can’t be far behind.

Further Evidence

By now you should know of my disdain with the media. Not only do they make up news, present opinions as news, they don’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain.

Watching some reports on Hurricane Harvey, the reporter was standing out in the rain and wind while the camera crew obviously was out of the weather only a few feet away. They think this is a dramatic effect. It’s not.

It is what is commonly known as stupidity.

What You See And Hear

I’ve been thinking again, and I really shouldn’t do that. But, here it goes. What you see and hear presented as news hasn’t been journalistic reporting in years. There’s an old saying, "If it bleeds, it leads," is the way most information is presented today. It doesn’t have to be true or relevant, but it does have to have shock value.

While absolute objectivity is difficult, today’s talking heads unashamedly spew the views of whomever they are trying to impress or from whom they can expect personal gain. And, they have no conscience about trying to make news to make a name for themselves. This is evident in the way we get daily, or hourly, doses of what Trump did in a negative point of view to stir up responses, even riots. Nothing would please the "media" more than a civil war, and they are doing all they can to make it happen.

Meanwhile back at the home front, the majority of Americans are trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. While a group of people so small they wouldn’t fill the bleachers of a little league baseball game, gets coverage as if they were the majority in the world.

Where will all this propaganda lead? It could easily lead to war if people let it. Look at ISIS. They are a hand full of radicals that have destroyed a way of life for millions. Hitler, Mussolini, and other like kinds knew that it would take a one way press to accomplish their thirst for power. Today, the media is looked upon by the same mind set Hitler used, as useful idiots.

If it is to stop, it will take a bunch of people to take a peaceful but highly effective approach. Bombard the sponsors of the impersonators with letters and calls demanding an end to the bias or face loss of consumers for their products.

The question is, "Will enough people act before a war begins?"

Letters and calls sure beat dogging bullets.

Protest

I know I am old and don’t understand a lot, but all these protest are really confusing. People are destroying public and private property because the symbols are offensive. These people did not live at the time the injustice occurred and neither did the people like me, that wonder, what the heck is going on.

They proclaim they are against hate, but it is obvious they hate whatever it is they are protesting about. It just may be that they hate because hate doesn’t have to be justified. It’s just hate.

Perhaps some day they will understand that hate doesn’t hurt the hated one, just the hater.

Hate consumes.

Love comforts.

Complain

There are people in this world that complain about anything and everything. If you haven’t met someone like this yet, you must be too young to get out of the house by yourself.

Personally, I think that Confederate statues and markers should be left alone. They are a reminder of what happens when people can’t sit down and solve their differences - millions die. But, if it makes some feel better, then taking down statues from public property is okay too. Not from private property and certainly not from cemeteries.

Exactly what good is being done by trying to erase history is still a mystery to me. It may not mean much when it’s over.

Comedian Dick Gregory, who died recently, told a story about segregated restaurants. He said, "I sat a lunch counter for nine months until they desegregated. Then they didn’t have anything I wanted."

Be careful folks. It would be really stupid to fight another civil war over the one we had.

More Facts

If there is anything that people hate, it’s facts. Facts mess up how people want to think and believe. That’s why ‘fake news’ is so popular. Let me be one of those people that like to point out facts that just upset the people that want reasons to hate.

First, slavery existed longer under the United States flag than it did under the Confederate States flag. While slavery was an issue, states rights is what brought on the war between the states. Facts are that most southerners did not own slaves and those that did usually treated them well. Yes, there were cases of extreme treatment, but the bad always is always reported and recorded.

With all the protest today because someone is offended is ludicrous. Monuments and names have existed for over 100 years. Now, it is the popular trend to destroy both. Facts are that the people on both sides of that horrible war did what they had to do at the time. Fact is, that if you destroy history and history will destroy you, because ignorance will allow repetition.

The truth is that if someone is offended, then someone needs to change their perspective. We have an area school that someone wants to change the name. The correct way is to take pleasure in attending a school that no one would have ever thought you could attend. Enjoy the progress and take positive steps to move further. There is no gain in destruction for the sake of destruction.

If we must allow a few people to operate under mob mentality, then we must understand the facts.

Everyone loses.

That’s a fact.

Amazing

It is amazing that the United States of America exist. From the beginning, there were divisive groups that sought to return to being ruled by England. Then came the Civil War, which was about States rights more than slavery. The list of uprisings and attempts to destroy this country is never ending. Yet, the country still stands.

This country was founded upon a foundation unlike any in history at the time and any in history today. It began as the great experiment. Ben Franklin said we are a republic just so long as we can keep it that way. Truth is that the key elements of a republic are quickly fading and those that would have us become socialist or communist seem to be gaining ground. Just open your eyes and look around.

There are those that would destroy today because of what may or may not have happened in the past. Reality is that men and women that did bad things rose above those things and created a government for people that wanted freedom more than anything. They united in faith and trusted their creator to guide them.

America is a long way from perfect, but it also a long way from the alternative governments. It’s amazing.

Liberal Logic

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has sent a message to Speaker Paul Ryan: "it is time to immediately remove Confederate statues from the halls of Congress." I guess they were okay when she was speaker, but not now.

Homosexuals are born that way, but children with Down Syndrome should be aborted. Only liberal logic can understand this.

Lastly, I am going to guess that the next step will be to proclaim that $20 bills carry a picture of a slave owner and should be returned to the DNC, or directly to Nancy.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Ashamed

The question is, "What are you willing to die for?" Would you give your life for your country? Or, would you roll over and become a slave or even killed? We are fortunate that we have young people that are willing to serve and protect our homeland, at all cost.

This is exactly what the young and old people of the Confederate States asked themselves. And, they were willing to die for their country. It’s all a part of the history of this country, and there are so many lessons to be learned from this history. Remember, "those who refuse to learn from past mistakes, are doomed to repeat them."

You cannot erase history by taking down monuments. Nor should they be taken down. The people were honored at a time that is not now, for their bravery and dedication to a newly formed country.

It is those that would try to erase the past that should be ashamed.

Hatred

Obama has tweeted that people have to learn to hate. This makes once in a row that I agree with him. We have a segment of society that is constantly being taught to hate, and I am not talking about just the white supremacy groups. There are as many if not more ‘haters’ causing division and spreading a message of hate.

Very few pay any attention to white supremacy groups. They are perceived to be a group of people without all their attention in the game. On the other hand, the opposite segment has all their attention in the game of spreading hatred and discord.

Remember, there are two sides to every disagreement. Rarely are both sides right.

However, they are often all wrong.

5 Seconds

What can possibly go wrong in 5 seconds? Would you drive with your eyes closed for 5 seconds? At 70 mph, those few seconds would take you over the length of a football field. To do so would be really stupid. You could get killed or kill someone. So, it is reasonable that one would not drive with their eyes closed for 5 seconds.

There are many things that could happen, like someone getting in front of you, not seeing a pedestrian or a person on a bicycle, or even just veering off the road into a tree. Yet, there are people on the road everyday that drive for 5 seconds with their eyes closed. And, they do it several times per day, just to be cool.

It’s called texting.

Eating Cost Too Much

My financial controller and I don’t eat out often, primarily because I am the chief shopper and cook. Notice, I did not say good cook. However in the past few days we’ve eaten out for lunch and dinner and as I always do with everything, I did the math.

If two people eat out three times per day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, it cost a bunch. We have a neighbor down the street, and that’s all they do. She says she does not cook and is not about to start. Some simple math, using the senior discount, tells me that the minium cost is about $2,000 per month. The real cost can be closer to $3,000 or even more.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, were I do the cooking, the cost to eat for a month (just food) cost less than $500 per month. And, that includes some nice steaks every week, not to mention a lot of other tasty grub.

When you are living on retirement income, you must choose carefully how you spend your money. So, we will continue to eat at home, most of the time. This allows us to have high speed internet, a movie service, and big screen TV with lots of channels.

Sardine sandwiches are nutritious and no one ask you to share.

Erasing History

There is a movement to erase history in this country. Confederate monuments are being removed and some destroyed, supposedly for what they stood for - slavery. Truth is that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Shouldn’t their monuments be removed too?

History in its true form is to teach what happened so that future generations can learn what is good and what is not.

We have moved so far from privileged and victims.

It would be stupid to return.

Little Boy

‘Little Boy’ was the code name for the first atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. It may be that there is a new one with the code name ‘Fat Boy.’

Reality is that no one wins in a war. The price is too high to pay. But, to preserve a nation, war can become a necessary evil, when the choice is kill or be killed. The sabers are rattling in a very small country that has everything to lose, but also a lot to gain.

The people of North Korea are starving slaves. A sure defeat would bring foreign aid relief from hunger and slavery.

Most people have heard the story of ‘Chicken Little.’ It’s about the little chicken that ran about warning that the sky was falling because something fell on its head.  Everyone laughed.  Chicken had no credibility. Flash forward to Al Gore.

Al said that he invented the internet.  When people laughed, he invented climate change.

Back in one of my previous lives I was a disc jockey and worked at several radio stations. And, I played a lot of Glen Campbell songs. Since his death there has been a lot of coverage on TV and radio and I for one think he earned all the praise he’s getting now.

I heard on the radio that ‘Wichita Lineman’ has been played more than any other song. I don’t know if that’s true, but I played it a few hundred times myself. For a song that was unfinished, it did very well in the charts and is still played today.

Glen Campbell was a talented man and there have been many comments about him. I will add my thought to his praise, with a simple statement that to musicians means a lot.

He was a picker.

As good as they get.

Don't Worry

While listening to talk radio, I heard discussion about the U.S. missile defense system. There is lots of chatter about the Korean threats. Well, guess what, we don’t really have a defense system unless you count the ground-based midcourse defense system or GMD. That’s the system tested recently. It was successful but that makes 10 out of 17 tested.

There seems to be agreement that we may not be able to defend a full fledged attack.

Don’t worry! Be happy.

Chicago

Let’s examine the facts on Chicago. The worst city for crime in the country is going to sue the Department of Justice for withholding funds to the police department for not complying with Federal regulations by proclaiming to be a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. In other words, Chicago is suing for breaking the law, to protect those that are breaking the law.

If that makes sense, please explain it to me.

New Officers

I have been the president, secretary and treasurer of a retiree club, that I formed here, for the past four years. It is a bunch of old people that are retired from the company where I worked for 30 years. My mission was to have meetings twice per year to keep everyone updated on company benefit changes, as well as other information of interest to retirees.

The problem with being a one man show is that eventually you get very tired. I’ve tried and tried to get some help, but no one wanted to get involved. At our last meeting I announced that they needed to get someone to replace me. Guess what? Three people are now ready to take over.

So, at the spring meeting we will have a whole new crew to be trained. There will be the President in training, or PIT, and the Secretary in training or the SIT.

Lastly there will be the Treasurer in training.

English

Among the things that our ‘representatives’ in Washington D.C. continue to ignore is making English as the national language. According to polls, 80% of Americans want this done. But, the elite know what’s good for us.

Making English the national language would cause all legal documents to be written in English. It also would mean that English would be the language for education except for foreign language classes. It would not prevent stores from posting signs in other languages, but could require that the signs also be posted in English.

It is inevitable that the loony left will someday require that more foreign languages be added to the list for communications. Just imagine pushing 150 for English. After they have gone through the 149 before you get this choice. Personally, I think when they add more, German should be the first.

Real Secret

The secret to a long marriage has been discussed for centuries. Some folks say that you must have common interest and goals, while others argue that opposites attract. There is always the argument that each party must be 100% committed to the other, through the good times and the bad. However, I do know a man that swears golf saved his marriage - she liked him not being home all the time.

You don’t hear about marriages that last 50 years much these days, but they are occurring. My in-laws are nearing 75 years. I know they had lots of ups and downs, but stayed together because they are committed to each other.

They may be millions of reasons for long marriages, but I think the single reason that goes beyond love, commitment and all the others is quite simple.

The real secret is knowing when to shut up.

Chips And Dips

Three Square Market, a Wisconsin company, says it is the first U.S. company offering to implant tiny radio-frequency chips in its employees. The company says that obtaining a chip is optional, but expects good participation in the project. The employees who allow the RFD chip implanted into their hand can use them to make purchases in the break room, open doors, login to computers and use the copy machine.

The company believes that the technology will soon be common place to make purchases, pay for public transit, and even use them as a passport. Right now they say that the chip is not trackable and only contains information you choose to associate with it. Those that don’t want the implant can choose a bracelet or ring.

While the technology supposedly doesn’t have GPS now, who knows what the future holds. I expect that hackers are already geared up to hack the chips. Just wait until your bank information, drivers license and all that other stuff is on your chip.

Okay, enough about the chips. What about the dips?

They’re the ones standing in line to get one.

Never Before

I do understand that my memory is not what it used to be and perhaps I didn’t always pay attention when I was younger, but I don’t think we've ever had as much ‘media’ coverage of what is or is not going on in Washington.
