I went to a neighbor’s fifty year wedding anniversary celebration today. It was a nice gathering of family and friends - with cake and punch.
There was much said about being married fifty years and how seldom it occurs anymore. I would agree that most marriages today don’t last very long and even twenty five years is getting more unusual.
People just don’t honor commitments anymore. I guess that’s why many wedding vows no longer include "until death do us part." It is a sad statement for society values.
I suppose next there will be options for a three, five, ten or fifteen year marriage. That would cut the divorce rate and cheat the lawyers out of fees.
How do two people make a marriage last fifty years? Maybe it’s because of love, commitment, financial reasons or for the children. I believe it’s having the maturity to be patient, forgiving, understanding and willing to work through the bad times while holding on to the good times.
It’s that or just fear that you might get someone worse than the one you got.
