Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day. That is not until September 16th. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory at Puebla over a French army that was marching toward Mexico City to collect some war debts. Against overwhelming odds and against all logic, the Mexicans won a huge victory, but the French army regrouped and eventually took Mexico City.

The holiday is barely noticed in Mexico, but is remembered in the United States, especially along the border. It is a good excuse to party. All it takes is some burritos, salsa, and Margaritas.

The two important things to remember is that it is not Mexico’s independence day.

The second is that it always falls on May 5.
