I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years. I’ve discovered there is a difference between man and woman stuff. Women like to change things. They throw away perfectly good items just to get a newer model. A simple example is soap dispensers for liquid soap. Why would you ever change those so long as they work? The correct answer if you ask a woman is, "because." Because seems to be a valid reason for everything - especially when it comes to getting new stuff.
In our move preparation, we have begun boxing up things and getting rid of things. I suspect that when the company that hauls away our trash gets here this week will have to call for back up. So what does the financial controller do? She goes out and buys more stuff and brings it home so we can move it. Silly me asked, "if these things are really important, why not wait until we get to the new house and then go buy them? You’d think by now I would know not to ask such questions.
A man’s stuff is usually things that have been around for years and may be broken. We are going to fix them, when we have time. But, we do not want to throw them away.
The one thing I have observed in moving or spring cleaning is that she uses a simple approach. If it’s hers, she may think about keeping it. If it’s mine, she throws it away.
Don’t ask, "why don’t you just do the same with her stuff?" I tried that one time.
Because is not the correct answer when I use it.
