A number of news sources are reporting that Pope Francis has stated that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences. In other words, you don’t have to believe and have faith to get into heaven. If this is true, it sounds to me like the Pope has pooped his pants. The Washington Times reports that the Vatican says that the Pope got it wrong.
Apparently Francis wrote a long open letter to Eugenio Scalfari, the founder of La Repubblica newspaper and made the statement. Mr. Scalfari reportedly responded to the letter and said the Pope’s comments were "further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all."
Letting your conscience be your guide won’t get you into heaven. If it were possible and you could live a life without any evil thought or action, never intentionally hurting anyone and forgiving everyone that hurt you, giving generously to help those less fortunate, lending a helping hand at every opportunity, treating all others as you would like to be treated and knowing you will not be, and finally letting your works speak for what a saint you are but having no faith or belief in God and the Christ, you will not get into heaven. Regardless of what any person says, it ain’t going to happen. Don’t believe me, then try it.
See how that works out for you.
