The NFL rakes in billions every year - last year, about $14 billion. Yet in the past two years they have spent tax payer money in the amount of $7 billion on stadium repairs and replacement. Because of loopholes in the tax laws, cities can issue bonds to build stadiums or repair them.
Now, if you are like me and never go to a game, why should I pay taxes to build them a place to play football? Wait, your argument that they bring in revenue is not always a good defense. Cutting to the chase, why not just use private funds to build a stadium and the other revenue would follow anyway. Plus, when you have such facilities, you add problems, like the need for more police and other services.
So, the tax payers should demand the teams get out of their house.
Get some players with more respect.

Take A Hike
I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of hearing about the sports players not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. And, furthermore I am tired of team owners and associations not taking action on this offensive behavior. We do live in a time when being offended is more important than murder.
Therefore, I suggest that if everyone that attends a game would spread the word - person to person - that if any player or players decides to not stand for the pledge, all the fans just walk out of the stadium - take a hike. Add to that, those watching on TV, just turn the set off.
It would be a matter of a few days, probably hours, that the message would be delivered. The flag is the symbol of this nation and if you don’t want to support America, at least have the decency to stand during the recognition of that symbol.
Am I so naive to think that this would ever happen. No.
If it does, I’ll be the guy waving the flag on my way out.

Shoes
Buying shoes on line can be a blessing and a curse. The truth is that buying anything that fits me on line is a curse at best. But, since the brick and mortar stores have cut inventories, and there are few selections for tall skinny people with big feet, I have to resort to more and more on line shopping.
Recently it seems my big feet are growing, at least the shoe size I’ve had for years, no longer fits. This has caused me to order, return and order again, and again to get a pair of shoes that fit - forget fashion. The positive has been dealing with the company I order from. Their representatives are always friendly and helpful. That’s a good thing because right now I am in the process of returning one pair and ordering two. And, because I am ‘special’ I got a promotion credit of $30.
It should not be so difficult to buy shoes. In the ‘old days’ one had only to go to a department or shoe store and get shoes off the shelf. Even my hard to find size. I won’t say the size, but I usually donate my shoes as housing for the homeless - with odor eaters.
If winter wasn’t near, I’d just go barefoot.
Some people think barefoot looks tacky with a suit, but I don’t.

Another Summer Rerun
I find it interesting that the more things change, the more they stay the same. I've been digging through the dusty files again and pulled out this ditty from 2011. Nothing has changed.
What Are You Afraid Of
Are you afraid of spiders and snakes? Most people are. How about bears and lions? Yep! The truth is that few of us encounter snakes, bears and lions. And, I am not afraid of spiders, but I sure don’t like them.
Tornadoes and terrorist are certainly on the list for most people to fear. Old people fear running out of money before they die.
It is interesting what we fear. Most people just go along from day to day without thought of what they are afraid of.
I fear people that think, and believe, that government should provide them with a risk free world. They see nothing wrong with giving up liberties, freedoms and rights. If you discuss with these people what the facts are about surrendering their very lives, the common response is, "I don’t care."
If "I don’t care" is an honest response, and I believe it is, then that scares me. It should scare you.
But, maybe you don’t care either.

Think Day
Every now and then it is good to look back, to see if anything has changed. Such is following post from 2011.
I think we need a think day. A national think day where everyone has to think. I realize that not everyone will be able to participate unless we provide Federally funded training. But then, that would defeat the purpose.
It is scary to me, and should be to you, that politicians do not believe you and I have the capacity to think for ourselves. That is why there is a constant barrage of lies, half-truths, non-factual facts and pure garbage.
Try thinking, if you don’t already. It’s really not to painful after you get used to. A simple tip on thinking about what goes on in D.C. is to ask a couple of questions. First question, 'where is the money trail.' Second question, 'do they really think I am that stupid.'
April 1st might be a good date for think day.

Don't Ask Don't Tell
The hard fast rule for dealing with old people is not to say, "How are you?" If you do, they will tell you. In fact, in you don’t ask, they will tell you, for hours. There are far too many old folks that really think you want to hear all the details of their latest doctor visit or worse, their latest surgery.
When these people get together, they swap embellished tales of everything from heads to tails. I don’t understand why. Perhaps it is because doctor visits have become their social life and they just want to share, as if to make someone jealous or to get some sympathy.
My financial controller’s brother has undergone numerous surgeries for skin cancers. And, after each one, he sends pictures. I told her to be thankful that he hasn’t had a hemorrhoidectomy.
Don’t ask! You really don't want to know.

As usual I am old and have a hard time understanding, so I have another question. With all the ‘protest’ going on everyday about something or another, there more often than not, a lot of fighting, burning, looting, and attacking the police. Yet the ‘media’ calls these actions ‘violent protest.’ The ‘violent protest’ want to silence free speech or have a trial by mob if they don’t like the outcome of a real trial where there is evidence and all the things mobs don’t see or care about.

Financing Available?
Isn’t it wonderful that cell phones now cost $1,000. When you add the cost plus the monthly services, you are going to need to get a loan, or give up something and that is not going to happen. I know people, individuals, that have cell phone bills of $1,000 or more. You can get a car for less, and just drive to wherever you want to connect. But, that might involve talking to another person and talking is so not cool. Now days, you text, tweet, message or email on phones.
The problem is that now that everything is on phones, the phones have to get larger and larger and larger. It would not surprise me to see the next generation of phones to be about the size that tablets are now. I’m guessing you will have to have some kind of harness to strap it to your body, yet flexible enough to watch a movie or whatever else that people do with ‘phones.’
I have a friend that takes his iPhone and his iPad with him everywhere. When he’s not on one, he is on the other. Makes it difficult to carry on a conversation with him. I wonder if when he’s home, he sends a text to his wife at the dinner table.
We have become a nation of marketing victims, addicted to a host of apps that entertain with unnecessary and often senseless distractions.
It is with some amusement that I watch and wait for the day that people will have to give up their shelter and perhaps food, so they can afford their cell phones.
I only understand, one ringydingy, two ringydingy.

Who's On First?
The company where I retired has undergone several changes in the past ten years. As a result, the retirement benefits have changed as well. Because I communicate with a large number of retirees, I’ve tried to keep up with changes to be able to help others be informed and understand. Until now.
Retirees are now divided into three groups. I won’t try to explain what has happened, because I don’t think I can. Worse, none of my contacts at the company can explain it clearly, either.
Therefore, when I get questions in the future, I am going to refer the person asking to a web site where they can watch the old Abbott and Costello routine about "Who’s on first."
I'll tell them, watch it over and over until they finally give up.
Then they will get the idea of what’s going on in the company.

Not Said
If you have not read the Declaration of Independence, you should take a few minutes and read it over slowly and thoughtfully. It has a lot to say, and it also has something not said. It is the ‘not said’ that people do not understand or want to understand.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," does not say that all men will remain equal. Each person is responsible for individual life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
Some choose to do little or nothing and they get little or nothing. Others become educated and apply hard work and dedication to reaching individual happiness. At the time of the Declaration there were obstacles that prevented some from opportunities, but today we have overcome most of the road blocks and are improving everyday.
Today, everyone has the opportunity to get more education, and apply skills and knowledge to gain experience that will lead to a more comfortable individual life while enhancing the community and the country.
It is time for all to say, "I was born equal, but it is up to me to stay equal."

Public Speaking
Most people, if not all, are not comfortable speaking before a large group of people. Some people just can’t do it. I have been speaking to a variety of audiences for so long, that I no longer have a ‘fear,’ but am having a hard time adjusting to what you can and cannot say these days.
When I first started speaking, because I had to, I did some research and attended some training to improve my presentations. And, as a result, I will pass along a tip - Know Your Audience! It doesn’t matter what the subject is, if you don’t know who you are speaking to, you won’t get your message through to them. If you have to speak about some science to a third grade class, you have to adjust your words to their level. The same is true if you are speaking to a group of senior citizens, aka old people.
Today, most of my speaking is to older folks. Some of them are really older. And, I make adjustments to how I present information.
When learning to do public speaking, you get lots of tips, like just visualize your audience naked to overcome being nervous.
When your audience is a bunch of old people, don’t do that.

What Happened
Hilldawg Clinton has written a book titled, "What Happened." It’s supposed to be her version of how anybody and everybody is responsible for her not getting elected POTUS. I have no intentions of reading it. However, I did catch her on a TV interview, that I watched with glee, explaining how everybody but her caused her to lose.
FBI Director James Comey surely is guilty of her not getting elected, according to her. But all the ruckus about her private server and secret documents had nothing to do with losing. I could go on and on about who is to blame and even get into how sorry you all should be for mistreating her. She is still suffering from not getting to be the first woman in the White House.
When asked about the ‘deplorables’ remark, she quickly dismissed it and said Trump is deplorable and that’s why she said that.
Hilldawg, if you are reading this blog, and I know you are not, here’s a hint on why you lost. When you reveal that you think people that don’t worship you are deplorable, you offend them.
Maybe you should try running for dog catcher - or maybe not.

Too Old
I have long been of the opinion that older folks should be allowed to do the jobs they think they can do until they find out they can’t. My financial controller and her mother used to keep my father-in-law from doing simple outdoor jobs because they thought he could no longer do them. I told them to let him try and he would decide if he should be doing something. I guess they won, because now he doesn’t do anything.
This week, I decided that I would hand wash my truck. The last time I did it was about six years ago and it took me about an hour. This time it took over two hours - with several breaks.
I don’t think it took longer because I am six years older.
I think the truck has gotten bigger.

The Donald is playing with fire. The debt ceiling deal President Trump cut with the Democrat leadership Wednesday is just what they wanted.
Trump agreed with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to fund the government for just three months and temporarily raise the debt ceiling, which is due to reach its limit on September 30. Republican leaders wanted an extension through the 2018 election with fiscal reforms attached.
From the front porch, it looks like they served kool aid and he drank it. Careful Donald.

Heroes
This is my week to use other material. I did not write the following, but I wish I had.
"Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUV's from across the South are headed for Houston. Almost all of them driven by men. They're using their own property, sacrificing their own time, spending their own money, and risking their own lives for one reason: to help total strangers in desperate need.
Most of them are by themselves. Most are dressed like the redneck duck hunters and bass fisherman they are. Many are veterans. Most are wearing well-used gimme-hats, T-shirts, and jeans; and there's a preponderance of cameo. Most are probably gun owners, and most probably voted for Trump.
These are the people the Left loves to hate, the ones Maddow mocks. The ones Maher and Olbermann just *know* they're so much better than.
These are The Quiet Ones. They don't wear masks and tear down statues. They don't, as a rule, march and demonstrate. And most have probably never been in a Whole Foods. But they'll spend the next several days wading in cold, dirty water; dodging gator's and water moccasins and fire ants; eating whatever meager rations are available; and sleeping wherever they can in dirty, damp clothes. "Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUV's from across the South are headed for Houston. Almost all of them driven by men. Labor Day
Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894 to celebrate labor’s contribution to the prosperity of the country. It began as a result of labor unionist and has grown to include both union and nonunion.
I just wonder how much longer the holiday can last. We are rapidly approaching the point of only half the country working to support the other half. When the non-labor folks become a majority, the labor folks will go broke. Then what happens?

Gasoline Shortage
There ‘ain’t’ no stinking gasoline shortage. I won’t repeat that, but I hope it sinks in and everyone will spread the word. On second thought, don’t tell anyone. The masses seem to enjoy a good panic, knee jerk reaction now and then.
People in Dallas are waiting in line for gas because of the damage in Houston. Dallas does not get gasoline from Houston. It comes from Oklahoma, which has a huge reserve. Yes, prices have gone up and will continue, but that is the old supply and demand rule, not to mention a good opportunity to gouge people on prices legally.
I think that we should tell the media that there is a shortage of toilet paper and watch people flood the stores to stock up. I can see it now, living rooms, garages, even kitchens piled high with toilet paper.
People are not that stupid, you say.
