Where's The Beef

Just in case you haven’t noticed, beef prices are up and are going higher. Being a red meat and tater’s kind of a guy, I am aware of the price increases. During my shopping day on Thursday, my weekly shopping day, I cruised by the meat counter at our country store. A couple of weeks ago, I bought some ribeye steaks at a great price and they were delicious - partially due to the cook. This week, the price for the same steaks is more than a cow used to sell for.

The recent drought in Texas and the cost of feed has caused ranchers to trim the herds. If you don’t know, most of the feed corn is now used to make ethanol for gasoline. Ethanol raises the cost of gas and reduces the mileage while it still pollutes the environment, and raises the cost of feed, and food, including dairy products. I’d like to give the people that come up with all these great ideas a little test. It’s a simple test. If it rains, take them outside into the rain and see if they have enough sense to come inside.

Don’t bet on them.  You'll lose.
