My youngest granddaughter is off to college this week. I’ve been thinking about what this means to a young person, and perhaps I can shed a little light on your new adventure. Yes, you will be own your own and making your own decisions. But, it also means that you have to clean up your own messes. You might want to keep those to a minimum.
There is a story about Socrates and a young boy who asked, “How do you know so much?” They were sitting on the bank of a river, so Socrates took the boy by the neck and pushed his head under the water and held him there. Just before he drowned, he let him up and when the boy finally got back to breathing, he yelled at the old man, “You crazy old man, you tried to drown me.” The old man wisely asked, “When your head was under the water, what did you want more than anything in the world?” The boy replied, “Air.” Then Socrates calmly said, “When you want knowledge that much, you will find it.”
In one’s pursuit of knowledge, one must know your strengths weaknesses. You cannot be the best at everything, but you can give everything your best. When you don’t know, ask questions. There rarely is a stupid question. Chances are when you ask a question, there is at least one other person in the class that will have the same question, but was afraid to ask. And, they will never admit they had the same question after you ask it.
You will have to learn to ask for help. The strange thing about asking for help is that you are paying the person you ask a compliment.
Take what you learn and associate it with daily life so it will be easier to remember. This means you have to study and work to understand what you learn. And, you will find some classes don’t make any sense at all, but you still have to pass them anyway.
Be disciplined and do what has to be done first. This is tough to do, when you want to do something else besides study - anything else as I remember. For the rest of your life you will have to be disciplined so you must learn it now.
You will encounter people, including professors that will try to influence what you think and believe. The best advice is avoid serious disagreements, especially with professors. Stay focused on why you are in college, to learn what you will need to pursue your dreams. Life is full of obstacles, so just work around them.
You will fail at something, an exam, an assignment or sometime maybe even a course. Failure is not final or fatal. It simply means that something wasn’t done correctly. You get a second chance. Try to remember that Abe Lincoln was a failure many times before he became president. Charles Schultz failed at so many things he wrote ‘Peanuts’ about a little boy that always failed. It was his autobiography. He turned failure into perhaps the best know comic strip in the world.
Off to college is an adventure to the rest of your life. It’s up to you. But, you are not alone.
When all else fails, ask someone that’s been there before.

Can't Be A Christian
A fellow I know posted on his Facebook page that one cannot be a Democrat and a Christian. He is basing his comment on the way Democrats oppose Biblical truths to attract more money and votes.
Democrat spokesperson Nancy Pelosi says that the trouble with uneducated white Republicans is that they get all hung upon gays, guns and God. (Remember, Pelosi is the one that said that the Obamacare bill must be passed so we can know what’s it in.)
Based upon these facts, I will have to go with the guy on Facebook.
Heck, Democrats don’t even like the American flag.

No Cops
There have been reports lately of police officers being refused service at fast food restaurants and other insulting acts against the police. The one I want to point out today is from a report in the New York Post.
Some police officers in uniform at the DNC were ordered not to go onto the convention floor, because they were in uniform. The Philadelphia police have been working with the Secret Service and other agencies to ensure security at the convention.
There has been some discussion as to why the police were not allowed on the floor. The best reason that I can think of is simply, just because the FBI won’t arrest Hillary, doesn’t mean that the Philly police won’t.
Hey, what can you expect from a group that didn’t display the American flag until the second day of the convention.
They wouldn’t have done it then, if someone hadn’t pointed it out.

Insulting Women
Hillary is the first woman to get the nomination for President by a major political party in the history of the country. According to some, this is supposed to mean that all women should vote for her, regardless of anything she may have done or said, or will do or say.
Another way of saying it is, “vote woman, even if you don’t want to vote for the woman.” I don’t think women are stupid, but apparently someone does.
I don’t know about you, but I find this approach insulting to women.

By The Numbers
Politicians live by poll numbers. Therefore, Hillary must be a tad upset about now - like seeing red. There are polls that show her trailing Trump, even the La Times poll. How can this be happening?
Hillary has done everything by the book when it comes to politics and otherwise. She tells a story about how great she is or will be and then contradicts herself. Even those that praise her contradict themselves and each other with lies, half truths or by simply leaving out facts. Is it any wonder that her poll numbers are falling?
Perhaps people are starting to distrust her more than they did. If anyone is honest with themselves, they have to admit that the woman lies - a lot. And, speaking of ‘woman,’ that seems to be the only legitimate claim to fame she has - being one.
I think Bill’s speech at the convention, did establish that she is a woman, and he has a lot of experience in identifying a woman.

Mean Spirited
It is obvious that if you say anything negative about “Slick Hillie” you are mean spirited. At least that’s what she says.
I caught a few minutes of 60 Minutes with her interview by Scott Pelley. She said that she was taking the high ground and would not be attacking Trump like he does her. That lasted only about two minutes before she attacked him.
In liberal media fashion, Pelley asked her the tough questions like, “Don’t you think bunny rabbits are cute?” He did ask about the DNC email scandal, and she said she wasn’t following that story and had no real knowledge about it. Will everyone that believes her please raise both hands.
Honestly, I believe that Hillary has no idea how much she lies and/or doesn’t care. She keeps throwing it out hoping someone will believe something. And, remember, I am not a big Trump fan either.
As far as I can tell, Hilldawg’s only qualification for the job of Prez is that she is a woman and people are mean spirited if they don’t elect her.

Taking Time
In the past couple of months two of my old friends died, one just last week. The following is a post from 2013. I think it is worth repeating, because we all are guilty of not taking the time.
Several years ago I read a feature in The Reader’s Digest that I’ve tried to find in archives but have not been able to locate. The following captures the spirit of the story.
A passenger settled into the back seat of a New York City taxi and asked the driver to take him to the airport. In just a few minutes, traffic snarled and came to a dead stop. The cab driver talked on his radio to the dispatcher and was told there was a major accident and it would likely be an hour or more before traffic would move. He turned to the passenger and explained the situation. The man in the back barely turned from staring out the window.
After a few minutes, the cabbie tried to strike up a conversation with his passenger to pass the time but the man seemed to be deep in thought about something. A few moments later he leaned forward and said to the taxi driver, “I’m sorry, but my mind is miles away. I got a call from my wife that my best friend died unexpectedly. That’s why I’m on my way to his home to comfort his family.”
The driver said, “Gosh, I’m sorry. I guess he was a really good friend for you to rush out of the city.” The man reached into his coat pocket and handed the driver a letter, without saying a word. “I can’t read your mail,” said the driver. The passenger made a motion to go ahead.
The driver began read the letter addressed to Ed. It talked about how long they had been friends and how their lives had gotten so busy they hadn’t stopped to enjoy each other’s company in a long time. “Remember how we used to sit in that leaky old boat and fish for hours without saying a word or catching a fish? Then go home and tell our wives what a great time we had,” the letter said.
“I remember the first time you beat me at golf, and the one time I won at bowling. You were there when my son was born. And, I’ll never forget the time you drove all night to be at my side in the hospital after I had that car crash,” the letter continued. It went on about all the good and bad times they had gone through and how much those times meant.
“Ed,” the letter said, “we are going to get together again soon. We’ll drive out and spend a few days with you and all the family, or you can come here if you want. I’ll give you a call and we’ll set the date and where we’ll meet.”
It was signed, “Your friend, Tom.”
The taxi driver handed the letter back to the man and said, “Sounds like you and Tom were very close. It’s hard to find a true friend like that. I’m really sorry about your friend.”
The passenger said, “You don’t understand. My name is Tom. I wrote that letter a couple of weeks ago late one night in a hotel room after a hard day on my job. I travel for a living. I stuck it into my briefcase with the intention of mailing it the next morning.”

Worse Purchase
If you are over 21 and have purchased anything, you will discover that there are certain things that are terrible investments. I would like to suggest that the worse thing you can purchase is a new car. “What,” you say? “I have to have a car.”
While is it true, we must have transportation, it is equally true that cars lose value faster than buying a herd of goats with no place to put them. On average, the value of a new car drops by up to 50% within two years. If you buy a $50,000 car you will own a $25,000 car in two years and you will have spent $12,500 per year or about $1,000 per month for your new ride. This is in addition to insurance, gas, oil, tires and interest you pay if you finance. Such a vehicle could be costing your $1,500 or more per month. Can you afford that?
There’s only one alternative. Buying a used car, which is also the sensible approach. First, you won’t take the big loss in value within such a short time. Yes, your used car will also lose value. But, typically not as fast. The trick is to find a good clean used car, still under warranty. And, it may not have all the features you want or it may not be the color you want.
Buying a new car is a big hassle. Buying a used car worth buying can be more of a hassle. It’s up to you to do a lot of research.
Of course if you are wealthy, and few of us are, you can be up with all the latest and greatest. Just remember, when you make those $500 monthly payments or more, you are losing up to double that amount in depreciation.
All of this said, the number one reason not to buy a new car is, “It’s cute.” Puppies are cute but the average cost to own one is about $500 per month, including vet bills, etc.

Charles was a self taught pianist and a composer. His composition, “Melody in A Major” in 1912 became a well known piano and violin song played at many official functions. In 1951 Carl Sigman added lyrics to the music, and the song became number one on the American Billboard chart for six weeks in 1958.
Tommy Edwards was the artist that sang, “It’s All In The Game.” And, Edwards’ version of the song also became number on the United Kingdom Chart the same year. If you search on Youtube, you will find the song has millions of hits.

Gun Ban For Republicans
Democrats have been attempting to ban guns for many years. The reason they want to disarm citizens is so obvious, but they pretend it’s because of anything and everything but absolute government control. Slick Hillie has said that the supreme court is wrong about the Second Amendment and she will do anything to do away with it.
The republicans have for the most part, opposed gun control. I think they may need to rethink their stand. There is one important point for banning guns they have over sighted.
If guns were banned, they couldn’t continuously shoot themselves in the foot.

Appliances
If you have a need to buy a new appliance, washer, dryer, refrigerator, oven, cook top, microwave, etc, take some advice, don’t do it. In the past two weeks we’ve had a built in oven and a microwave go out. We were able to get the microwave repaired because it is old.
The new oven, a Whirlpool, cracks and pops as it warms up. I’m talking cracks and pops that make one think there is something major happening. Whirlpool says this is normal. Then, there’s the matter of the fan in the oven. I’ve heard helicopters that are quieter. Whirlpool says this is normal. That’s their way of saying, “You bought junk at a very high price, now you have to live with it.”
The technician that installed the oven said that new appliances are noisy and the tech that came out when we complained about the oven said the same thing. They both are independent technicians. Each of them told me that today's appliances are designed to only last a very short time - not like in the old days when a refrigerator could last 20 years or more. And, poor quality seems to be the norm.
No, it is not possible to live without modern appliances, but get them repaired as long as you can find parts. The best advice I got from the technical people was, if your microwave goes out, throw it in the trash and go buy a new one yourself.
But, you can now get a refrigerator with a TV screen built into the door. And, you can use your smart phone to dial in to a camera and see what’s on the shelves, in case you want to know.

Ear Protection Warning!
Everyone knows, or should know, to protect your hearing. It will be bad enough as you age, but unnecessary abuse of your hearing can be serious.
From now until at least the first of November, you are advised to get some ear protection that blocks out all sound. Otherwise you will be subjected to an onslaught of political ads that would make a deaf person beg for mercy.
While you at it, you may want to get some eye protection too. Neither of the candidates is going to win any beauty contests. It would be terrible if Trump has a bad hair day, but I don’t think I want to see Hillary if she has one.

Stop
Three more police officers have been killed. This time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It has to stop. If it does not, it will be a short step to martial law, or anarchy.
While it is the duty of all America to restore law, order and unity, it is time for the black communities to stand up and say stop. Let the radicals know that this is not going to happen anymore.
My guess is 99.9 percent of these communities are disgusted with these lawless acts. Chief David Brown of the Dallas Police Department has the answer - "Be a part of the solution!"
Stop it now.

Buying A Car
There comes a time in almost everyone’s life that you must buy a car. And, guess what? Everyone gets a good deal. NOT!!!!
Buying a new car or a new used one is an emotional experience, like falling in love. Falling in love is a bad place to make intelligent decisions. Your want overcomes your should know better.
My ace number one daughter had to buy a car to replace the one she had because it got hit by another car. Fortunately, she listened to me on some of the advice I gave her. Just how much she listened, I will never know. But, she is pretty good at separating herself from what car salesmen tell her. Car sales people do not like me.
The whole point I am trying to make is, when you buy a car, be sure you need one and do the research. It is not a quick process to do correct research. Bad research will cost you thousands of dollars. Stay away from those advertised sites that tell you what a good deal on the car you want should be. Yes, they may give you the average price paid, but the average person is below average in knowledge when it comes to buying a car.
I could give you a step by step process that I use, but it would take up several pages. Most people are not going to do that kind of research or put that much effort in buying a car. Especially if they really ‘love’ the car.
I take pride that car dealers hate me. But, they always agree to the deal I offer.
Makes me wonder if I’m missing something.

Stop and look around the country you are living in. The following are just a few examples of the insanity that governs our country. The inmates have taken over the institution.
You can be arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for entering this country illegally.

Does Not Have A Clue
It is my considered opinion that Barack Obama doesn’t have a clue about anything but what he wants. On Tuesday, there was an interfaith memorial in Dallas for the slain police officers. This was a memorial service, not a political soap box, which is what Obama thought it was.
Police Chief David Brown spoke for three minutes. Former President George W. Bush spoke for seven minutes. Barack Obama spoke for about 40 minutes, referencing himself at least 45 times.
Somehow I believe that if Chief Brown had known that Obama would take away from the service dedicated to his officers and their families, he would found a way to keep him from attending.
Chief Brown is a man of honor. The Chief knows what a memorial service means.

Once there was a fellow that was a pathological liar. Everything he said was a lie. Nobody believed anything he said. A Gesture Of Unity
It is time for citizens and police to become one, dedicated to upholding law and order in a spirit of cooperation for the benefit of all. I would like to suggest a simple gesture to impress upon both police and citizens the commitment that we need.
When you come face to face with a police officer, place your right hand over you hear and hold it for a second or two. Then extend your hand to the officer. The officer should place his/her hand over his/heart and reach out and shake your hand.
It is heart to heart that makes the bond real.
Try it and tell others to do so too.

My Job
I see the worst of the worst in people at the worst possible time.
I have to remain calm and objective and try to hold the line.
I have laws that I am sworn to enforce and that I must do.
I am sworn by oath to protect and serve others too.
I must make decisions that I don’t want to make.
I have less than seconds to not make a mistake.
I must suffer criticisms and am often called by a bad name.
I can not respond, and must accept that for which I have no blame.
I must work long hours and often leave my family alone.
I constantly remember that my goal is to get safely home.
I am the first to be called when trouble rears its head.
I pray, “Dear God, don’t let anyone end up dead.”

I softly smile and reply, “You’re worth it.”

Millionaire
I always wanted to be a millionaire. That’s not unusual in today’s dollars. Lots of young people are millionaires. The problem with becoming one is it takes discipline. I don’t have any of that. And, it takes a vision and a plan.
I used to work for a multi-millionaire that got his riches the old fashioned way. He worked for it. But in today’s terms, the take-a-way I got from him was control your money. Meet your needs and limit your wants.
It is interesting that today’s “millennials” are not investing in the markets as much as they are holding cash. This means that they have a lot of money, but it is in a bank. They are looking for security and flexibility should they come across an investment opportunity that requires immediate funds. Not a bad plan.
Personally I am a very conservative investor and lean toward cash funds. The way I got it figured, if I live to be 150 and don’t spend another dime, not even for food and shelter, I can be an almost millionaire.
That’s pretty good for me.

Don't Believe
Someone once said, “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.” That simply means that things are often not what they appear to be.
There are over a half million police in this country. They are dedicated to protecting and serving the communities they serve. Yet, we see protest in the streets against them for something they did not do. Yes, there are bad COPS. But when you have four or five shooting incidents that are not what they appear to be until a jury and judge rule, demonstrators are falling prey to believing what they want to hear and see and not what may have actually happened.
Rather than demonstrators respecting the fallen Dallas officers for their dedication to protect and serve, they continued to protest, some violently. What does this say about the character of those few? Does it say that a mere few hundred are so obsessed with destroying a system of law and order, truly represent millions?
It may be that the millions understand that the alternative to law and order is anarchy?
It is time for all to stop, look and listen.

Pray For Dallas
When events happen that boggle the mind, like the deliberate murders and wounding of Dallas police officers, there is shock and human emotions run wild. Take it from the grumpy old man, the first and last thing that you can do is pray.
Pray for the peace that goes beyond understanding for the families, friends and fellow officers. Then, pray for an awakening for the city and this nation - an awakening that America has left God, and now is the time to return.

FBI: Federal Bureau of Innocence
Boy, if I ever commit a major crime, I want to be investigated by the FBI Director, James Comey. He laid out the violations to federal law, and declared Hillary innocent. Silly me, I thought his job was to investigate and present evidence to prosecutors and let them decide. I’m left to decide that Loretta Lynch had already told him that she didn’t want the ball and if he knew what’s good for him, he should be judge and jury returning a not guilty verdict.
If you think this event is scary, Hillary above the laws, think about what happens when she gets into office. She knows she can do whatever she wants with no chance of being prosecuted. And, she will have access to a lot more classified information, like the codes to launch missiles.
Better get your sleep now.

My Fault
As I have mentioned before, we have a special needs granddaughter. Also, mentioned before, she and I have an agreement, she does what she wants to and I help her. That also goes for most things she wants, which is very little. At 27, she is unbelievably content.
I do remember a few years ago when she decided that she needed a golf cart because she had gotten to drive one at a friends house. She promptly told me that she needed one. I bought a golf cart, which she could drive with someone riding with her.
Recently my ace number one daughter had a wreck in her car. A young man crashed into the rear of her car and sent it to the shop. The only rent car available was a minivan. Granddaughter loves minivans. And, after riding around in it for a few days, she really likes it. Today, when we visited their house, she met me at the door and said, “Granddad, I need to talk to you. I need a minivan.”
She told me what color to get.

Read It Again
How many times have you read the Declaration of Independence? Once, twice, fifty times or perhaps not at all. I suspect that the majority of the population would have to answer once or not at all. The following is in part the said Declaration with emphasis on what you should have learned from the document. In today’s lingo, “the take away” of the meeting.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
