My Job

I see the worst of the worst in people at the worst possible time.
I have to remain calm and objective and try to hold the line.
I have laws that I am sworn to enforce and that I must do.
I am sworn by oath to protect and serve others too.
I must make decisions that I don’t want to make.
I have less than seconds to not make a mistake.
I must suffer criticisms and am often called by a bad name.
I can not respond, and must accept that for which I have no blame.
I must work long hours and often leave my family alone.
I constantly remember that my goal is to get safely home.
I am the first to be called when trouble rears its head.
I pray, “Dear God, don’t let anyone end up dead.”
I do get an occasional, “Thank you for your service.”
I softly smile and reply, “You’re worth it.”
