Humans are the only creatures that are controlled by time. We have to get something done or be somewhere by a certain time. We eat on time - most of the time. And, we have to plan ahead for the time when we retire or if we should become disabled. We worry about time because once a second passes, it never comes back.
We complain about the bad times and quickly forget the good times. How often do you hear someone talk on and on about something, and say, "I'm glad that's over?" And, then when they do remember a good time, it's a simple, "That was a fun time."
It all seems so silly because we are only going to be here at best, about a 100 years or less. The average age to die now is in the 74-78 year range. We have to get everything done, we think. Which poses two questions, how long is eternity and how far away is it?
The best answers I’ve heard are simple. Just imagine a block of stone that is one million feet wide and tall - a one million foot square block. Every one million years a bird comes by and sharpens its beak on the stone and removes one millionth of an inch in only a millionth of an inch area. When that bird has whittled that block down to dust, you have just spent one millionth of a second in eternity.
And with all our concern about the few years we are here, consider this, how far are you away from eternity?
One heart beat.
