Semiannual Meeting

Among the things I do to stay busier than I want to be in retirement is hosting a retirees meeting twice per year. I am supposed to be replaced in that spot, but not yet. At our April meeting, we had speakers that addressed Alzheimer disease and elder law. Like most people, the attendees had never heard of elder law, but now they have.

Two ladies presented a broad brush of Alzheimer’s and did a great job explaining what it is and how to deal with it. There are a lot of misunderstandings about this disease and a lot of questions were answered.

Elder law is a specialize practice focused on helping people get their estates in order, provide guidance on rules and policies of programs available to seniors, and of course simple things that are not simple, like wills and trusts.

Naturally the point that stuck in my brain was a question by the law speaker. He asked, "Do you really need a will? The answer is no, because you will be dead.

It’s your survivors that need a will.
