Nursing Informatics

I understand that I don’t get out much and there is a world of things I don’t know, but every now and then I run across something that I just have to find out about.  Nusing Informatics is one of those things that caught my attention.  Check out the following definition.

Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology.

In plain English, this is someone that takes a lot information, puts it all in a computer and hits a button that creates a plan of action for medical matters.  I think it is kind of like what used to happen when you called your doctor.

He/she would say, “Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.”
