Kids

Have you ever wondered why children are called "kids?" Unless you are weird like me, probably not. Well, the bottom line is that nobody really knows, except circa 1200 young goats were called kids. And, in the 1590s, calling children kids surfaced as slang. By 1812, the extended meaning was applied to young thieves and thugs.

A quick look at the similarities between baby goats and humans reveal that they are both cute. They both can be a real pain at times, and yes, they both even smell bad under certain conditions. Both are curious and get into everything they are not supposed to, and make loud crying noises if they don’t get their way.

The difference is that goat kids grow up and become goats and children remain children - at least in the eyes of their parents, grandparents and some uncles and aunts.

I don’t know if it’s derogatory to call children kids, but I suspect that it is politically incorrect. Looks like we need a "kids" march and some name changes.
