Every year on February 14, millions of people exchange cards, candy or flowers with their special valentine. It isn’t exactly clear why, but I think you can blame the poet Chaucer, because he was the one that tied the day to romance.
As nearly as I can tell, Roman Emperor Claudius II, executed two men with the name Valentine on February 14th in two consecutive years, in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was recognized by the Catholic Church. Hence the celebration.
Fast forward to today and you will find that this is the second most popular day for giving cards, after Christmas. There are approximately one billion Valentine’s Day cards exchanged in the U.S. alone. The plot thickens. Florist wanted in on the business too, and it is the day to send flowers to you sweetie.
With my suspicious nature, I wonder if old Claudius wasn’t an entrepreneur. Perhaps he just wanted to make a few bucks with flowers and cards.
A man ahead of his time, but just a little bit late.
