Halloween 2

My financial controller is out of town for a few days and left me in charge of trick or treaters. She gave me specific instructions that I am not to hand out cans of pork and beans. I assured her that the beans are a lot healthier than candy and have plenty of fiber. She was still not impressed and made me swear that I would not put cans in the little monsters’ bags, buckets or whatever they collect in.

In the spirit of the day, after she left, I can up with another plan. I got a haggard old witch costume. I don’t need the mask. Then I drug out an old pot that looks like a witches’ caldron.

I’m going to put on the costume, build a fire, put the pot on the fire and pour the beans into the pot. I’ll call it, "witches brew." It won’t be hard for me to "cackle" and stir the pot. When the little grubbers come by, I’ll just put a big spoon full of beans into their sacks. Talk about your tricks!

What else could I do with all these cans of pork and beans? I hate those things.

Happy Halloween. Hey-hey-hey.

Halloween

Halloween is a time for kids to dress up and go trick or treat. At least it used to be. In our society today, you are better off not taking children door to door to gather candy. These are scary times. But, Halloween is for scary, right? Dress up in ghost or ghoul costumes and try to frighten someone younger. Don’t try to frighten younger people if you are a grumpy old man. There is risk of bodily injury. They could hurt themselves laughing so hard.

What would really scare Americans on Halloween? I have made a list. You knew I would, so here goes: breweries stopped making beer; all sporting events cancelled; satellite and cable TV shut down; internet interruption; cell phones go dead (that’s an ER event); pizza declared poisonous; and finally, sex in any form declared illegal.

I think I’ve scared myself. I’ll just go and get ready to hand out cans of pork and beans to any trick or treaters that come by my place. Now that’s scary!

Jesus' Name Unconstitutional

According to World Net Daily, a board of county commissioners in North Carolina is asking the Supreme Court for help. Its members don’t believe they should have to forbid volunteers from mentioning the name of Jesus in prayers offered before their meetings.

But the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State are standing by their victory in a U.S. circuit court decision that states even "a solitary reference to Jesus Christ" in invocations before the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners’ meetings could do "violence to the pluralistic and inclusive values that a defining feature of American public life."

Judge James Harvie Wilkinson III in the Forth Circuit Court of Appeals wrote that invocations offered in Jesus’ name are inherently "sectarian" and thus should be censored lest they make some attendees feel "uncomfortable, unwelcome and unwilling to participate in ...public affairs."

So as you see, the movement to remove Christianity from our society moves on. I wonder what would have been the case if someone prayed to Allah?

I have no way of knowing what the outcome on this case will be, but I do have a suggestion. Pray in Jesus name if you want to. This is the kind of civil disobedience we could use a little more of.

What would Jesus say? He might say that his name has been unconstitutional ever since He came.

At least they are not feedings the Christians to the lions in America - yet.

I hope if a lion eats me, he gets an upset stomach.

Sensitivity Training

Floydreports.com carried a story today about a Muslim middle school math teacher who received $75,000 because the school district refused to allow her to make hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime religious requirement. McArthur Middle School in Berkeley, Illinois, must pay and implement a sensitivity training course throughout the district.
Administrators refused to allow the teacher to take unpaid leave because she had been there less than a year, it was just before exams and she was the only instructor in the department. Her union-brokered contract offered her infidel counterparts no comparable leave.
This all happened in 2008, and yesterday, after Department of Justice intervention, the mathematician Muslim was awarded the $75k in compensation and damages.
This incident poses a multitude of questions. Why was the religious requirement not discussed before she was hired? Why would someone be given special privilege because of their religion? What is the DoJ doing involved? What does this mean for Christians and their Holidays?
A few days ago, I read that Hertz fired several Muslims because of their failure to do their jobs because they stopped working several times each day to pray. Does this mean that Hertz should have to pay and implement sensitivity training?
I want to say, that I do appreciate the Muslim dedication to their beliefs. However, in the American culture, it is common place for Christians to "get the ox out of the ditch." Fire and police employees work every year on religious holidays, as do doctors and nurses and others in the health care and protection business.
When are we going to have sensitivity training for Christians? We’re not allowed to even say, "Merry Christmas" in some circles. There has even been an attempt to prevent Christian prayer at funerals.
Naturally, I am especially interested in sensitivity training for Baptist. There is a real need for others to understand why we are so focused on taking up offerings and eating fried chicken - and ribs.

Need a Job - See a Celebrity

Dr. Walter Williams had an article last week in the Patriot Post. He pointed out that according to Forbes Celebrity 100 list for 2010, the average top ten celebrities salary, excluding athletes, was just over $100 million. The Wall Street Journal Survey of CEO Compensation, November 2010, revealed that the average salary for the top 10 CEOs was $43 million.

Now obviously there are more CEOs than celebrities, but the point is that the accusers make more than the accused when the subject of "evil rich" comes up. Oprah made $290 million. Heck, Howard Stern made $76 million. For what?

Oprah didn’t provide me with one ounce of food or services that I require daily. Actually, she didn’t even provide me with entertainment, which is what she is paid for. I’ve never watched her show and from what I have heard about it, I am a better person for not watching.

So, my conclusion is that the "protesters" need to move to the celebrity homes.

I’m sure than all celebrities would cheerfully give them jobs. After all, they seem to think that the protesters are wonderful people.

Seniors

These remarks are to the Senior Citizens. However, those that have not attained that magic age may discover a truth not known or forgotten. Incidentally, I refer to not yet seniors as SIT’s - Seniors in Training.

The reason the message is to seniors is because you have lived longer, seen more, experienced more and made decisions that you did not want to make. Many of you have children and perhaps grandchildren. You understand how it feels to impact the life of someone you love more than your own. The years have brought the joys, the sorrows, and the regrets of having to take an action that scared the daylights out of you. But, with time and experience you learned how to make more good decisions and fewer bad ones.

In 1968 we were introduced to a new term in our society. Tough love. Merriam Webster defines tough love as ‘love or affectionate concern expressed in a stern or unsentimental manner - as through discipline - especially to promote responsible behavior.’ We have come to think of this as dealing with a rebellious teen or perhaps intervention for an addiction. It is hard to live sixty years or more and not personally know of a case of tough love or even many.

While it is natural to view tough love as being harsh on the one needing help, it often is tougher on the one taking the action required. As the definition states, love is the cause for discipline to promote responsible behavior. As many of you know, it often does hurt you more than the one you love when you have to use discipline.

Today, you and I are faced with a tough love decision that cannot be avoided. Reality is that many have ignored or avoided the inevitable but time has run out. The United States of America must have tough love or it will become as doomed as a drug addict.

I love America. I know that you do too. The question is, how much? In tough love, the one that loves must be willing to go the distance at whatever the cost may be to instill responsible behavior. Our government has behaved irresponsibility for many years - Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. The norm has been to tax and spend with little or no accountability to the citizens from which the revenue is taken. There are so many examples that we surely could not number them of government waste and absurd spending.

We now find ourselves in a vicious debt cycle that is spiraling this once great nation into bankruptcy. Tax and spend has been the rule. It has been said that the golden rule is, "he that has the gold, makes the rule." But, that’s our gold they are spending.

"What can you do about it?" Those are often the first words uttered if you mention the situation we find ourselves in. "I’m just an old man or woman, in many cases in poor health, with little or no money," is what I hear all the time. You can argue that you have put in your time, paid your taxes and did the best you could with what you had. You can say that now it is the young peoples problem. Isn’t that what your predecessors said when you were young? Ladies and gentlemen, if that’s your position, then there is nothing you will do about it. But for those that have one good fight left in them, we must take our country back.

There must be a balanced budget amendment. Anyone knows or should know that you can’t borrow almost half of every dollar spent and expect to survive. Government spending must be controlled with "pork barrel" politics thrown out.

There have to be laws to limit terms in Congress, put government employees, including Congress and the President, under the same health care plans as ordinary citizens with no benefits when they leave office. As it stands today, there is no motivation to empathize with ordinary citizens like you and me.

We must have restoration and protection of funds for Social Security and Medicare. Fraud must be stopped and severe punishment administered for those convicted of the crimes.

English is the National language and we need a law proclaiming it as such. While we should try to accommodate some languages, it is they that should have to press one.

Our borders must be secured and illegal immigrants deported. No more anchor babies - when a person is in our country illegally, their offspring are not ours to support.

This great nation was founded upon Christian principles. Unless we get back to those guiding tenets, we will cease to be. You cannot remove the foundation from a house and expect it to stand.

Can these things happen? Yes. Will they happen? I only know that they will not without a fight. It will take a commitment to stand up and be counted. Letters, phone calls and personal visits to government leaders is what it will take. Remember, "united we stand, divided we fall?" If the seniors in this country stand, then the answer is yes, we will restore America.

And if you are hesitate, because you have been cowed so long that you believe you can’t do anything, I remind you that Patrick Henry said, "The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave."

Beep Beep Veep

According to an article by Kay Daily on GOPUSA today, Human Events’ reporter Jason Mattera may lose his press credentials for asking Joe Biden a question. If you haven’t heard, Jason asked if Biden thought it wise to link the jobs bill to increased rapes if it doesn’t pass. If you haven’t seen the video, it’s on YouTube and is funny.

After hundreds of thousands views on YouTube, a bunch of ink and radio air time, the Veep’s office picked up the phone and called the Senate’s Standing Committee of Correspondents at the Senate Press Gallery. They want Jason’s hide.

I would like to suggest that if Jason gets another shot, he should ask Biden how much is two plus two just so we would know if he can count the number of rapes.

I wonder if England would take the "Colonies" back? God save the Queen!

Yo Mama

Here we go again on the OWS folks. I have been thinking again. It seems to me that the mothers of these people should have taught them some life lessons. Apparently not. So, here are a few things their Mama’s should have mentioned a few thousand times:

Life is not fair - never will be.
You are not entitled to what others have.
Work is honorable and the only satisfactory way to get what you want.
There are crazy people in this world - don’t be one of them.
Not everyone is like you and they don’t want to be.
Don’t be somebody’s fool or disposable idiot.
Look both ways before crossing the street.
Don’t do drugs or associate with those that do.
Know what you’re talking about or don’t talk - you learn only by listening.
Look at history before striking out for the future - repeating mistakes is stupid.
Bathe daily and put on clean clothes - all over and under.

Unfortunately it may be too late for these people and those that drive them.

One more. Not everyone likes you. They might like you better if you bathe.

Retired People

When I was still in the work place, I was often challenged to motivate employees and outside company contacts. Over the years I worked with a variety of professions and bigger variety of employees. I used a plain approach to employees, treat them well, take care of them when you can and convince them that their job was too important not to be done right and on time. Still, I understood that managing employees is like herding cats.

However, a couple of years ago I decided to organize a retiree group for those that live within a certain geographic area. We meet once per month and eat lunch. Often I arrange for a speaker to join us and present information that should be important to the group. Also, I survey the members to find out what they want to hear. This is where the frustration comes in.

After two years of doing everything I know how to do and asking others for input, I have come to a conclusion. Trying to motivate retirees is a lot like trying to get the residents of a local cemetery up and running.

Getting old is tough, but it’s a lot tougher if you give in.

The "News"

I’ve done a lot of jobs in my life and was pretty good at most of them. Well, there was that stint at the drive in movie theater. I only lasted one day there. Don’t ask!

But in my previous lives, I was a pretty dang good investigative reporter. Believe it or not, I presented the facts and let the audience decide their opinion. In broadcasting, you find someone to imitate and then develop a style of your own. I tried hard to be like Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. If you don’t remember them, they were like Joe Friday on Dragnet - just the facts. If you don’t remember Dragnet, then you can stop reading now because you won’t understand anyway.

Somewhere over time, the "news" quit being news and became an entertainment program. Now days the reporters subscribe to the old adage, "never let the truth stand in the way of a good story." Most of what you see and hear may or may not contain many facts. If there is factual information, it is slanted to make the story appear the way the speaker or writer wants it. Don’t believe me? Try watching the "news" and paying attention to what is not said.

Will Rogers said, "all I know is what I read in the papers." If Will were alive today, he would know a lot less than he did - a whole lot less.

Veep Beep

VP Biden has stated that unless the current jobs legislation is passed, rapes will increase. Since we are nation of taking ‘polls’, shouldn’t there be a poll of rapist to determine if that is true. Are we to take the word of Joe Biden just because he says so?

I don’t know about you, but if he sees some connection between rape and jobs, he may see invisible rabbits - like Harvey.

Explain how people like him ever got into high office. Doesn’t say much for the rest of us.

At least he’s more entertaining than the ‘flea party’ a.k.a. occupy wall street.

Misery Index

According to Money News and Newsmax, the misery index has risen to the highest level since 1983. The misery index is simply the sum of inflation and unemployment. It is now at a reported 13.0 percent. And, there are those that suggest that inflation is closer to 20% because government accounts only those filing for benefits. That would mean that the misery index would fall around 23 percent. I know I feel more miserable, so it must be the higher number.

If you think you are miserable now, just wait til all the campaigning really begins. Just trying to decide on a Republican candidate is torture. Over the next twelve months, I predict that we will be barraged with more stuff than an organic fertilizer processing plant.

The question I have today is simply, ‘why can’t the Republicans come up with a simple plan like the Democrats?’ They have the philosophy of tax and spend. The other side should just it down to, ‘don’t tax and don’t spend.’ But they can’t even decide that.

I don’t know about you, but my misery meter is pointing into the red. What will it take and how long will it be before enough people realize that if this country is to survive, it is the politicians that need to be made miserable - better yet, unemployed. Both parties are included.

When you get to be a grumpy old man, you are supposed to be miserable. But, this is ridiculous.

Agree With Union

It’s finally happened. I actually agree with the Teamsters union and the Independent Drivers Association. They are attempting a last-ditch effort to stop Mexican trucks from full access to U.S. highways.

According to the AP, the truck will cross the border at Laredo, Texas and head north to Garland, Texas on Friday. This is a part of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. Giving credit when credit is due, the current administration cancelled allowing the trucks to enter in the U.S. However, Mexico retaliated by placing huge tariffs on agriculture products worth more than $2 billion per year according to the AP.

Mexico dropped half of the tariffs after negotiations of an approved inspection and monitoring program for the Mexican trucks. They promise to drop the other half as soon as the truck on Friday heads out of the border area.

A little background. Mexican trucks brought products to the border. They were off loaded and inspected onto American carriers and sent on to their destinations. This of course meant jobs for U.S. drivers and companies. That’s where the union and the association have a dog in this fight.

There are other concerns about safety, traffic laws, smuggling, and other criminal activity. Even under the current system, criminal activeness has never been stopped.

Okay, let me see if I have this straight. We are overrun with illegal immigrants from Mexico. They sneak in and take American jobs. And they overwhelm our education and social services to the point of going broke. Now, we are going to allow more jobs to be lost, all out in the open. If we don’t comply, we have to pay billions in ransom.

I didn’t move. My address is still in the United States. At least it used to be. Who moved my America?

Pool Halls

There was a time when almost every town had a pool hall. I haven’t seen one in several years. Truth is I never hung out much at the pool hall, but there was comfort in knowing our little burg had one.

If you never experienced a pool hall, they were poorly lit and smokey. A lot of people stood around and did nothing. That’s what I did best and still do. There were hustlers that would take your money if you thought you were good. And, if you were short on curse words, you could usually pickup a couple of new ones.

Pool halls were thought of as bad places. Because of all the smoking, gambling and cursing I guess. But they did hold a certain mystic. They were the place to go and pretend to be tough. If you really wanted to try your luck at being tough, someone would oblige you with a pool cue.

I talked to an old friend today and we got off on the subject of pool halls. It occurred to me that you just don’t see them much anymore. Another part of Americana gone by the wayside. I don’t know, but maybe there’s an app for pool on smart phones.

I don’t have a smart phone. And, I was never good at pool.

Religion

How many religions are there? Another one of 'those' questions. I suppose somebody has the answer, but I’m not sure. It seems today that at every turn there is a religion that I never heard of or at least I’m not familiar with.

There are religions that worship idols and those that don’t. Some religions want all non-believers to be dead. Seems to me that would cut down on prospects to join. That’s probably why us Baptist don’t believe that way. We want all the members we can get. It really helps when the collection plate is passed.

At least in America, we can still believe the way we want to, but it appears that belief is diminishing. What’s amazing is that Christians are falling more and more out of grace with the powers that be. It’s amazing because Christianity is the guiding force that forged this country. But, these days, that fact is often disputed.

One might ask, "what happened?" Well, in our quest for allowing everyone to practice their religion, Christianity suffered. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for others to worship whatever they worship. They can be wrong if they want to. I just get a little upset, actually a lot upset, when we can’t believe the way we want to anymore.

There are a lot of religions. Most of them seem to worship a supreme being. They all have beliefs, rules and regulations and cultures. I would like to know why in the good ole USA, we can’t be a Christian nation. Other countries get to have a predominate religion. Just doesn’t seem fair.

Maybe I need to focus on finding out if God grades on the curve. If not, is seventy passing?

Quotable

Every now and then I stumble upon a quote worth quoting. Usually it’s something Mark Twain said. I was watching one of those police shows on TV the other night and the lead character used a quote that is worth repeating:

Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) American author and Unitarian clergyman, said, "I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do."

There is a lot of wisdom in that phrase. Think about it. I am still thinking about it.

Special Needs

The doctors said she would never walk, talk or interact with other people. In the beginning they had no real diagnosis. She spent a lot of time in doctor offices, hospitals and therapy centers. But she did learn to say some words. And, because she couldn’t walk or crawl, she rolled. She rolled to the TV and by the time she was two she could operate a VCR to play the videos she wanted to watch.

As time progressed, the diagnosis came to light. She had a very rare syndrome. There are only a couple hundred others in the world. There is no treatment.

But, there is the human spirit. Today, she walks, but does not like to walk very far, especially if it is hot weather. She talks, not in sentences but in words that communicate what she wants or needs and how she feels. It is interesting that when she is really tired, she speaks in sentences. Her brain slows down and she can communicate.

She went to school and a teacher noticed that she loved books. She can read and does for hours at a time. If it is electronic, she probably can operate it. Her favorite entertainment is a computer.

She has social friends developed from school in the Special Ed class, and from just about anyone she meets. She always has a hug.

Bad days are few. Her attitude is always, "everything is okay." I wish I could say that.

Society has given her and millions of others the label of "special needs." I would argue that it is not them, but us that have special needs. We need to see them succeed, play, laugh and push harder to do anything that we take for granted. It is us that can learn more from them than they can learn from us. We don’t think we have time. They have all the time they need.

My granddaughter is twenty one now. She stays with me during the day sometimes. I know and she knows that she rules me. That’s the way it should be. I have special needs to be more understanding, more patient, more loving, more determined, and more focused on the things that are really important. She shows me how.

I am a slow learner, but she is patient with me.

Lawnmower Update

Earlier I complained about technical writers and my problem with replacing the drive belt on my riding lawn mower. I am happy to report that the job has been done without the technical manual. All it took was a lot of sweat, some imagination and two helpers that had never done this before either.

In case you should ever have to do this job I have a list of the tools you will need:

Three screwdrivers - a big one, a medium and an it-a-bitty
Pair of vice-grips
Several ratchet sockets of various sizes and a ratchet that works
Some open end and box wrenches - doesn’t matter size they are because they won’t work anyway
A piece of small rope about four feet long
Car ramps - to get the mower up off the ground
One five gallon bucket
Box of band-aids - may need two boxes

That’s it. There’s no technical jargon involved. You just take off the stuff that holds the belt and put on the new belt and put the stuff back.

And, there are people that think I couldn’t be a technical writer.

Occupooped

I don’t know about you but I am tired of the occupy groups. Comedian Ron White says, "you can’t fix stupid." It must be true. The media is still promoting the occupiers.

Bill Engvall, another blue collar comedian, has a saying, "here’s your sign." That means you are stupid and the sign is so you can proudly proclaim it.

Occupiers and the media obviously are big fans of these two comedians.

They have their signs.

What Can I Do?

You may have noticed there are a lot of people complaining about government. If you haven’t, then you aren’t talking to anyone for very long. One of my pet peeves is the comment, "what can you do about it?"

Anyone that mutters that statement probably can’t or won’t do anything about it. Far too often I hear, "I vote and that’s all I can do." WRONG!

Let me give you a quick lesson in human nature. Believe it or not, politicians are human - at least they fit the biological requirements. Humans are driven by what they want and how much pressure is applied from others to get them to do something. Politicians are just like me and you. They flock to those with similar beliefs and opinions. The key difference in politicians is they want to be re-elected.

When pressured by others and tempted by campaign contributions, they will and do bend to some insane ideas. So what is the obvious action ‘you’ can do about government?

First and foremost, tell them what you think. Next, use your circle of associates to tell them what they think. Have them tell their associates to tell them what they think. See how simple this works.

Most people I know are not wealthy - especially me - so how can they be heard? Just sit down and write a letter - a real letter with paper and pen and envelope and stamp. This gets attention! Be precise and concise on what you want to say.

It cost little to launch a national movement if you get a friend and they get a friend and so on. Just think what would happen if everyone on your block wrote a letter - then the neighborhood, then the town, then the State.

Far too many people don’t even know who their representatives are. Look it up for them or show them where they can find out. When they say, "what can you do about it?", then look them in the eye and say, "if I tell you what you can do, will you agree to do it?"

My dream is to get the people in my burg to write our congressman and senators. That way, when more letters pile into their offices, the aide or whomever reads the mail will say, "that idiot in Texas has recruited some more idiots and now he’s got the whole town writing."

It’s also good for the economy. All those stamps will help the postal service with their budget deficit.

Technical Writers

If you have bought some new gadget, it probably came with an instruction manual or at least a note to go to the internet and download the .pdf -that stands for portable data file. I have a multitude of manuals and pdfs. What I have discovered is that if you don’t know how to operate or install whatever you have, the instructions won’t help.

Technical writers are (a) very smart and think everyone knows the product as well as they do, or (b) don’t have a clue about the product. But, they can write in several languages. It is important to confuse a lot more people. There have been times when I thought that maybe I should follow the directions in another language - made as much sense as the English version.

I have a riding mower that needs the drive belt replaced. This is the belt that makes the mower go. I got out my manual and found the part number and phoned in an order for new belt. That was the last thing I understood.

The obvious next step is to go over the instructions on how to install the belt when it arrived. Wrong! The instructions begin by telling me I have to remove the mower deck first. OK. Not so fast. You have to observe the entire motion of the deck drive belt and position of all guides and keepers. Maybe I should just take a picture? There is a lot of mentions about idler clutches and parts A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J etc, - well you get the idea. Then there are the springs - that’s a whole new adventure.

I have called my friends (1) and neighbors (2) and they don’t have a clue on how to replace the belt either.

I am not stupid - crazy, but not stupid - so why is it that the instructions and the mower don’t go together?

In my next life, I want to be a technical writer. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat. None of them appeals to the cat.

Understanding Women

My financial controller left this afternoon to go the local Braum’s ice cream store to pickup a carton of milk because she likes that brand. She was gone for quite some time.

When she returned she brought in a new blouse, two purses, a couple pair of shoes, some canned goods and bathroom cleaning supplies and a roast for Sunday dinner. And, oh yes, the milk.

I’m not sure which Braum’s she shops - there is more than one in our area - but I never want to go there.

Women wonder why men don’t understand them. I quit trying years ago but am still amazed that someone can go for milk and bring home all that stuff. If a man had gone for milk he would bring home milk.

I think she said she got the shoes over by the chocolate ice cream.

A Better Person

It has been said that if you want to be a better person, you should associate with better people. This is one of those rare truisms. You just can’t expect to improve yourself or you behavior if you run with the wrong crowd.

I would suppose that a large number of drug addicts, thieves, rapist, and murderers, might have avoided their fate if they had only aspired to move away from similar acquaintances and simply started hanging out with another circle of friends. Thankfully, in most of society the afore mentioned practices are not the norm.

It is true that if you want to be smart, associate with people smarter than you. If you want to be better at sports or any endeavor, always play with someone better. To make more money, learn from those that make more money - not from the junkie or welfare recipient.

It just makes sense. Keep yourself moving forward to better, wiser, richer and smarter friends. You don’t have to forget those that don’t move up with you. Nor, do you or should you think that you are better than them. When you do that, you move back to the starting point.

We've all been asked, "what would you be if you could be anything in the world?" Perhaps the answer is simple. If I could be anything in the world, "I’d wish to be a better person."

Maybe this is why no one hangs out with me.

Chicken Little

Chicken Little ran around yelling, "the sky is falling, the sky is falling." Maybe he would be right today. Have you looked at the world we live in? If you haven’t, then at least take a peek.

There are wars, both the shooting kind and the political kind - neither will never end. There is class warfare, race warfare, religious warfare, and God only knows what other warfare. The good ole USA have been overrun with an army of illegal immigrants that have more rights than I do.

Our economy and the world economy is facing challenges that some will not survive. Recovery for survivors may take years.

Unemployment is rampant around the world. And, it does appear, at least in our country, the government is doing all they can to make it worse.

There is not a day there’s no news about some child being abused or killed. Usually the perpetrator gets off with a slap on the hand.

Alternative life styles are to be embraced. Let me say this about that. I don’t believe that homosexuality is anything other than a choice. Further more, if people make that choice, or if it is not a choice, then go away and live your lives and get off my TV. You are not special because you are not normal.

Drug lords reign in Mexico and the violence is creeping our way - maybe running our way.

Food prices and health care cost go up everyday. People are losing their homes and cars.

A friend says that it can’t be long until the Lord comes back. I worry that He has looked down and decided He doesn’t want to come back and get into all this mess.

That’s my Chicken Little rave for today. I do think I saw a piece of sky fall outside my kitchen window.

Occupy Wall Street

Since everyone else is weighing in on the Occupy Wall Street protest, I feel compelled to add my two cents worth - actually just one cent worth. If you haven’t heard about these protest against capitalism, then you live in a cave and all I want from you is an invitation to move in with you.

These people need to spend their time looking for a job or volunteering in a soup kitchen or at least sitting in front of their big screen TV and staying out of the streets where working people dive. How is it that people of what appears to be of well means, have the gall - that’s an old word for acting like a jackass - to protest against mommy and daddy’s means of supporting them? Are they so ignorant they do not know that millions of Americans have their future invested in Wall Street?

I have a small fortune in the market - anything over $100, to me it’s a small fortune. My 401k and IRAs have taken a substantial hit, but you don’t see me protesting. Is there corruption in Wall Street? That’s like asking if there are stars on a cloudless night. Should the corruption be stopped and the perpetrators punished? Yes! Good luck with that. The mystery of capitalism is that in spite of corruption, the market flourishes and the masses benefit more than those immoral few that get rich by hook or crook.

What I see is an effort to take the pressure off the Obama administration and further the cause of socialism in this country. Also, has anyone noticed that these "people" are usually unruly and even violent in their approach. Seems a little hypocritical to what they spout about peace, love and lots of money for all.

There’s an old Meryl Haggard song with lyrics about "we’ll all be drinking free bubble up and eating rainbow pie."

Neither the protesters nor the song gives any insight as to who is going to pay for the bubble up or the pie.

Didn't Think

Whatever I write about is whatever I think about.  I didn't think today.

Feels good.

They've Done It Now

ESPN, Fox News and the Chicago Tribune have all piled on Hank Williams Jr for his comment about President Obama and John Boehner playing golf. Williams reportedly said, "It’d be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu." He further commented that "Obama and Biden are the enemy."

From where I sit, the media does attack anything or anybody they perceive as conservative. They whole heartedly buy into the ‘tea party members are racist terrorists’ philosophy. Little do they know what they have done by attacking Bocephus.

Every redneck in the country is now ‘O'fended.’ There are some things you just don’t mess with and this is one of them. You don’t want to get red necks riled up. They will hurt you. It will be interesting to see if "All my rowdy friends" is returned to the theme song slot on future football games.

All the red necks have to do is boycott Budweiser and the resulting loss in ad dollars would put them all out of business. I don’t know but I think the media may find themselves getting an "Attitude Adjustment."

I hope so. But then, I have a mean streak.

Trading Cars

I do think I could write a large book on trading cars. It is just not fun. But, my financial officer wants a new car. We have, or I have, been on-line comparing and pricing as well as making trips to dealerships to get up close and best deal prices.

A couple of days ago, we decided upon a vehicle but the dealer would have to get it from another dealer. They promised it would be here today before noon. Guess what? It wasn’t. It won’t be available until tomorrow.

Meanwhile back in time at the dealership. My financial officer had agreed on another vehicle I had arranged for based upon what she said she wanted, but when we got there, she changed her mind several times. Every time she would look at another option, she changed her mind and cost more money. This is what caused us to have to wait for the dealer transfer.

But it looks like we may be getting the new SUV tomorrow. I emphasize may! Car dealing makes me tired. But almost everything makes me tired.

Just so you’ll know, she got leather, ambient lighting - whatever that is - and all the electronics you can get on a dashboard. There’s also a sun roof or moon roof as some call it. It does let the sun in. However, on a test drive of a similar model, I tried it as a moon roof. You really can’t moon the car behind you and drive at the same time.

Country singer Jerry Reed said that if God had intended us to have cars, we would all be born with a parking space.

Amen.

Women's Rights

If you haven’t heard this news, you’re probably deaf or blind or it’s not a hot item on tweeter. Saudi Arabian women will be able to vote in 2015 and run for local elections. They still can’t vote or be elected to high political positions.

Before you jump for joy at this unheard of move, consider that Saudi women are not allowed to go any where in public without a male escort and they are not allowed to drive.

Rumor has it, all the polling places will be only in public places that you have to drive to get to. And, all the men will vote absentee.

Ants

As kids, we used to have ant farms. That’s where you build a box with glass and put a bunch of ants inside and watch what they do. It is more exciting that watching daytime TV - or night time for that matter.

Since those "good old days" we have seen the invasion of the fire ants. One does not want an ant farm with fire ants. Those little devils would likely eat the box - glass too. Now I am informed by the AP - Associated Press - that a South American ant dubbed "hairy and crazy" is marching across the south.

Crazy ants don’t march in a straight line or build mounds where you can see them. They like to live in shelters already prepared such as houses, barns, storage sheds, industrial sites and etc. They eat anything animal or vegetable.

You are advised to be on the alert because they ride across country in bales of hay, shipping containers and the like. Pesticides don’t work for long. One researcher says he sprayed a half acre and in a short time he had two inches of dead ants piled up on the entire half acre.

You see, if you kill one, then hundreds more come. If you kill a thousand, millions come to replace them. Sounds like politicians to me.

Surely the ants aren’t that crazy???
