The Texas Legislature is now in session. They meet every two years for 140 days. Some have said, they should meet every 140 years for two days. I agree with that.
One bill that is up for discussion and possible vote deals with gun licenses. Briefly, there is discussion about doing away with license fees and training, but keeping the background check requirement. We now have the ability, with a license, to carry firearms on our person out in the open. I’ve seen only one person doing that. I was not in favor of that idea, nor am I in favor of removing training from licensing requirements.
I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but to walk around town toting a gun without training is not a good idea. A gun is a tool and tools require training and practice. To let someone just start using a band saw without any instruction is inviting amputation of body parts.
It is a great responsibility to carry a gun. It takes practice and forethought to become proficient in controlling the tool to do only what you intend to do. With the exception of police and military, people should use guns for sport shooting and self defense when there is no other choice.
I suggest that removing the fees, they are expensive, is not a bad idea. But, if someone is a person that should be allowed to carry a firearm, that person should know a lot more than those that don’t choose to carry. Seems to me that an increase in training would make sense.
Oops, I said "make sense" and that’s not what the legislature does.
