The "gist" of something means, the most essential or most vital part of some idea or experience. "He got the gist of the speech," is a simple example. Well, I think I am getting the gist of getting older. When you get older you get a lot of gist.
There are oncologist, urologist, ophthalmologist, audiologist, dermatologist, cardiologist, physiologist, anesthesiologist, and proctologist. That last one can really get your attention.
Heck, even the woman that cuts my hair is a cosmetologist.
She tells me better stories than the others.
