Advertising Truths

Aren’t there truth in advertising laws? If so, they are not effective. Just this week I saw an ad proclaiming that a diet product was "flying off the shelves." I went to the store to watch that, but I didn’t even see one box jump a little.

Then there was an advertisement about hordes of people going to doctors for a new joint pain treatment. That’s right, no hordes of people.

What really scares me is that there are those among us that actually believe all the stuff that is said about a product or service. As discussed at another writing, there is no such thing as a free lunch or buy one and get two free. But people react and that’s what the advertisers want. One of my favorites is a TV spot where a woman proclaims she "literally" fell out of her chair when she called to get an insurance quote. I would ask, "What kind of life does she have?"

Are we as a species so lacking that all it takes to motivate us is a "Sale" sign? Is it any wonder why we have the leaders we have in government.

If you really believe that a politician is going to do what he/she says, then I have bridges on sale.

Buy two and I’ll throw in a river for free.
