Christmas Shopping

Christmas shopping is not easy.  Unless, you do like I do and let someone else do it.  What to get someone is not an easy decision.  You can pretty well rule out those hideous holiday sweaters and fruitcake.

The problem is that we rarely know what someone would really like.  Even children and grandchildren.  The end result is usually a rush to get something, anything to put under the tree, but that’s really not the way it should be.  The real problem is that we don’t know those we love the most and what their likes and dislikes really are.  Sure it easy with young children.  It’s not that simple when people grow up.  What you think they will like, they don’t.  Yes, they will pretend your gift is great, but quietly place it in the corner, next to the pile of used wrapping paper.

After 50 years, neither my financial controller, nor I, knows what the other would really want.  I think we gave up several years ago.  You see, when people get older, they usually just go and get what they really want.  And, you can’t guess what they have or don’t have or what would make the perfect gift.
Since there’s been only one perfect gift, Jesus Christ, I guess what ever we do is not always going to be the exact right thing.  What we are really trying to do is say, “I love you.”  That’s what He said.
Maybe next year we all should endeavor to really get to know those we love.  Then Christmas shopping would be easier.

I have learned to avoid standing in long lines for returns, so I always get something I can use if my financial controller doesn’t like what I got her.  This year I’m getting her a new rifle, although I know she hates guns.

Last year I got her a fishing tackle box.
