More This About That

Yesterday’s post was about protecting yourself.  I’m not finished talking about that.  There are some really simple things one can do, like keeping doors and windows locked when you are away and when you are home.  It only takes a split second for someone to walk through an unlocked door or crawl in an unlocked window.

Believe it or not, your car alarm system can help in an emergency.  If you park your car within range, all  you have to do is hit the alarm button on the key.  A good idea is to sleep with the key on your night stand.  If a car alarm goes off in the middle of the night, it will annoy someone enough to investigate.

Should you have a situation where someone has broken into your house, run if you can.  Get outside and go to a neighbor you know.  If that’s not possible, just start running and yell “fire.”  People respond to fire, but most folks won’t come out if you shout, “he has a gun.”

Most people can think about calling 911, and you should if you can.  But, remember, the police or fire department is going to want to get a lot of information that you may not have time to give.  Give them your location first, so at least they will know where to start searching for your body.

Use anything and everything as a weapon to defend yourself.  You would be amazed how much damage a 90 pound woman can inflict when her life depends upon it.  Go for the eyes and throat of an attacker.  The theory is that they will quit attacking if they can’t see or breath.  Please understand that you may injure yourself when you strike with force.  But, what’s worse, a broken finger or hand, or being dead.

Home alarm systems will alert you if you have one, but it will still take time before police respond.  If you don’t have one, get an alarm company sign and put it up in your yard.
Remember, to think when you are least likely to think.  Rehearse different scenarios so that your muscles will do what needs to be done before your brain kicks in.

When my ace number one daughter went off to college, I gave her a gun.  Yes, I showed her how to use it.  And, I told her to get away if she was confronted.  Go out a door or window, lock yourself in another room.  Heck, hide under the kitchen sink if you have to.  And, if all else fails, use the gun.  Just shoot until the aggressor stops.

Fight or flight is a common phrase, but flight is always best if possible.  Avoidance is the objective.  Be aware and stay in control.

Rule #22: Only you can protect you.

In most cases, ain’t nobody coming to help you.
