Do you recognize any of these names? John Hart, William Hooper, Samuel Chase, Lewis Morris, George Ross. If you do, you would be one in millions. So what’s important about them?
They are famous men. They and 51 others took a pledge that changed the course of the world. That’s right, 56 men, ordinary men, changed the world with a statement, "we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor."
And, they included in their pledge, "with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence."
I didn’t list all the men that signed the pledge that basically was a death sentence if their agreement failed. But, there is one that you would likely remember - John Hancock.
The Declaration of Independence was dated July 4, 1776. How far have we come from the ideals of these men?
They weren’t politicians. They were Americans.
